Types of Steel We Use in Our Wood Turning Tools
High Speed Steel (HSS)
Our High Speed Steel wood turning tools are designed for the beginning to intermediate woodturner but are also great for experienced turners that want a high quality tool at an affordable price.
They feature excellent edge-holding ability and will last 8x longer between sharpenings as compared to carbon steel.
M2 High Speed Steel
Wood turning tools made with M2 High Speed Steel offer superior toughness, wear-resistance and edge-holding compared to standard HSS. They will hold an edge longer, which means more turning and less sharpening!
We offer standard M2 HSS tools as well as cryogenically treated options for even greater performance.
All Hurricane M2 HSS Wood Turning Tools will ship pre-sharpened, so they can be used right out of the box!
M2 Cryo High Speed Steel
Hurricane offers cryogenically treated options within our M2 HSS line of wood turning tools.
All Hurricane Cryo Tools are triple-temper heat treated before being cryogenically frozen to provide each tool with superior edge-holding ability.
The process of cryogenically treating wood turning tools all increases wear-resistance by 3X vs. non-cryogenically treated tools!
M42 Cryo High Speed Steel
M42 High Speed Steel is a step up from M2. It is the highest quality wood turning tool that we offer and is ideal for seasoned wood turners and professionals.
M42 is a premium cobalt high speed steel with superior hardness, wear resistance and edge-holding ability. As a premium option, all of our M42 Steel tools are cryogenically treated.

Bowl Gouges
Hurricane Bowl Gouges are perfectly designed for use on wood lathes for a variety of turning projects. Each bowl gouge is machined from round bar stock in diameters of 5/8", 1/2" and 3/8". Our bowl gouge offering includes tools made from HSS, M2 HSS or M42 HSS. Beyond these, we also offer many cryogenically treated options!
Spindle Gouges
Hurricane Spindle Gouges are used for detail work such as coves and beads in spindle turning work. They are available in 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" diameter tools and are ideal for use on wood lathes.
Spindle Roughing Gouges
Hurricane Roughing Gouges are used specifically for spindle turning. Many wood turners use this tool to knock the corners off of square stock in spindle turning. Our roughing gouges are available in 1" and 2" widths both with a thickness of 1/5".
Never to be used for bowl turning.
Skew Chisels
The skew chisel is often considered challenging to use, but once mastered, will give a smooth finish unlike any other wood turning tool. Hurricane Skew Chisels can be used for planing, cutting beads, pommels and more. We offer skew chisels in widths from to 1/2" to 1 1/2".
Scrapers
Hurricane offers several varieties of scrapers for wood turning in widths from 1/2" to 1 1/2" and in thicknesses from 1/4" to 3/8". Our scrapers are available in many shapes, including round nose, square, curved and for cutting dovetails in bowl bottoms.
Parting Tools
While we do offer several specialty parting tools, Hurricane Parting Tools generally have a diamond shape with a cross section which allows for a reduction in friction of the tool against the sides of your workpiece. Our parting tools are ideal for a variety of projects on the wood lathe.

As a relatively new turner, I don't have a huge frame of reference, but I bought this set to replace the bowl gouge that came with a starter set I previously purchased and am THRILLED with them thus far. I think a lot of new turners expect tools to be ready for use out of the box, but I think you'll quickly find that manufacturers put little to no effort into the shape/edge of the grind prior to selling. The reason for this is 99.9% of turners end up putting their own grind on the tool anyways. When I was first starting and trying to spend as little money as possible, this can be frustrating because you don't necessarily have the tools (bench grinder (slow speed preferably), sharpening jig, etc.) to reliably sharpen them. If I have any advice, invest in these tools sooner rather than later. It's going to hurt the wallet in the short term, but you will spend MUCH less time trying to figure out ways to keep your tools sharp, and more time having fun on the lathe.After receiving these, I put fingernail/irish grinds on them and have been thrilled with the product. This is a tremendous deal price-wise as well. Like I said, being relatively new, I haven't been able to afford the Sorby's and Pinnacle's of the market (I'm sure they are worth the money, but similar to a beginning golfer having a great set of golf clubs), but for me they work great.

These are a great quality for the price. They are not super high-end bowl gouges, but for the money they are WELL worth it. They came Sharp out of the packages. They don't waste time with fancy little wooden boxes for them. However, they each came individually packaged, with the tips coated in a protectant. Sharp coming out of the protectant, though I did change the angle myself. I am very pleased with the quality of these, and see myself using them for years to come. Once I get some high-end gouges I'm sure these will become secondaries, but they are my first grab right now. These are my go-to's. I can't say enough good things about these. They have completely changed my bowl turning. Thanks for making such a good product Hurricane. I could not be happier.

This is the second group of Hurricane turning tools I purchased. Both of the sets are well-made, have a good balance, and came sharp enough to use right out of the box. This actually was important to me because I am still pretty green on a lot of woodturning skills (like sharpening). I am sure there are better quality tools available, but these were perfect for my skill range and budget.

Hard to beat for the money!The good:There is enough flute to sharpen these tools many times.The steel is good and takes a good edge. I holds its edge much better than "benjamins best" toolsThe handle shape is nice and I much prefer the long handles.The neutral:The shape of the grind is very basic and like most turning tools, should be reground.The bad:The finish on the handles was horrible - some sort of thick blackish paint that filled in the very roughly turned shape. I took my random orbit sander to them and then wiped on some polyurethane/stain combo and in 15 min had a nice looking and feeling set of handles.My thought was what do you expect for that price? After a year of working with them, I'm not at all unhappy that I bought them!
