About this item

  • Hand hammered in Turkey from cast B20 Bronze — this Ride carefully toes the line of an unfinished cymbal to give you a remarkable raw sound full of depth, darkness and definition
  • Pure stick definition — the unfinished surface develops clear stick definition and the subdued, smokey wash stays out of the way to let the bead of your stick shine through
  • Light ride — Vintage Pure Light rides respond with a lower tone and slightly grittier attack when compared to the Vintage Pure rides
  • Dynamic control — the hammering, sand blasting and lathing combination leaves you with a cymbal that you can dig into with total control at all times
  • Increase musicality — Byzance Vintage drum cymbals have become an immensely popular choice among top recording and touring artists.Modern versatility rooted in tradition — Meinl Byzance cymbals are deeply rooted in traditional cymbal crafting methods, yet their old-world background is dialed-in to 21st century needs.Match your heros — Meinl Cymbals are used by pro drummers like Benny Greb, Anika Nilles, Mike Johnston, Matt Garstka, Stu Fagan, Craig Reynolds or Robert Sput Searight

Crafted to mimic the sound of an aged cymbal, the Vintage voice within Byzance has unique features that simulate the aging process of a cymbal to couple relic sounds with modern appeal. The Vintage line was born from the Sand Ride, a flagship cymbal developed with Meinl Cymbals artist, Benny Greb. Byzance Vintage now includes a wide array of cymbals that have helped to define the Meinl sound. Sand models feature narrow blade lathing and a sandblasted finish, whereas Vintage Pure models are unlathed and raw. These cymbals are made in Turkey from cast B20 bronze and hand hammered into shape by skilled Turkish cymbal smiths.

This Cymbal is totally awesome. Very very versatile. It has a smooth raw/dry wash to it when pushed, but nice stick definition if you poke at it more gently. The bell is fat... MAYBE just a tad too thick on the bell, but it is the character of the cymbal and it's all about high quality with this piece. The sand finish on top is great, and the bottom of the cymbal is beyond great.. beautiful...its too bad that the bottom is more hidden, but when the drums are lifted and looked at from the front, it adds a whole bunch of character and class to the appearance of the kit. This cymbal fills a much larger sound spectrum than my previous ride... and than most rides i've heard. Part of the fun is that you can play this cymbal differently than many of the rides out there because it sounds so good when you slap it around a little to add some sustain to the mix.The BG Sand ride is going to stay on my kit for a LONGGG time if not indefinitely... this is the kind of cymbal investment you know you'll always keep around regardless of what else you're trying out. much respect for Benny Greb... he knows... and anybody who's studied his playing and attention to sound details knows that he knows... :)

Got this to match the Sand hats and Sand Ride I'd picked up a while back and it compliments them perfectly. As a crash this thing is low pitched, dark and warm. As a ride it's got a low tone and ping that you can feel deep in your bones. A bit pricey, but one hell of a cymbal.

I bought this cymbal after watching Benny Greb's demo. I sold my Zildjian K Custom 20" Dark Ride and waited with excitement thinking I'd found my new sound. My initial impression is wow - this is a cool looking cymbal, however the tone is a little too dense and clangy for my tastes, reminiscent of Zildjian's earth ride. Basically, this thing doesn't sing. The wash is nice but almost too much as it tends to overpower the sticking volume during busy patterns. The benefit here is that it does crash well for a ride. The bell is small and does not provide much of an accent. There are some demo's of this ride from Memphis Drum Shop on youtube... [...]In summary this is a decent if not overpriced cymbal. Not for me though, as the search for The ride continues...

This is one of those cymbals you're better off hand selecting because cymbal will vary slightly with the sound and markings from the sandblasting technique used on it. Unfortunately, lots of drum shops don't carry meinl, yet, let alone various cymbals from different series'. With that in mind, I actually don't think this cymbal is TOO versatile, but it's not for just one style either. The sandblasted finish gives it a little bit of a quieter, washier sound than a "traditional" cymbal, hence why these cymbals are more flexible and can literally bend. Despite the washiness this ride still has great stick definition and the bell realllly cuts through.People say this is a cymbal for fusion and jazz, but you can totally use it for other types of music, in my opinion (execept maybe metal). The key is to make sure it blends in with the rest of your cymbals which, depending on the rest of your setup can be an issue because of this cymbals unique sound characterists and different volume levels. If your whole cymbal setup is the sand series this cymbal will really shine, but if you are combining it with some mb20 crashes or perhaps even a custom projection crashes things could begin to sound a little messy. Keep in mind that you won't have these issues if you are just using this cymbal for recording purposes since you can adjust the levels in a studio.Nevertheless, I think this is an AMAZING cymbal and an example of what kind of things we'll be seeing in the future with cymbals.

This ride is so perfect! Dark and washy with a big humongous sound and a clear and killer bell. The crash on it it's even bigger and more mighty (Benny Greb said and it's true!).Don't have any second thoughts on this one, you are just never gonna regret it.

Great unique sounding bell that stands out. It rings a lot. Overall, I really like the tone qualities of the cymbal.

Such a worthwhile product. Great playability, I'm surprised how versatile the cymbal is, and using some moon gel increases certain features, depending on the placement.
