These devices are precision timing circuits capable of producing accurate time delays or oscillation. In the time-delay or monostable mode of operation, the timed interval is controlled by a single external resistor and capacitor network. In the astable mode of operation, the frequency and duty cycle can be controlled independently with two external resistors and a single external capacitor.
The threshold and trigger levels normally are two-thirds and one-third, respectively, of VCC. These levels can be altered by use of the control-voltage terminal. When the trigger input falls below the trigger level, the flip-flop is set, and the output goes high. If the trigger input is above the trigger level and the threshold input is above the threshold level, the flip-flop is reset and the output is low. The reset (RESET) input can override all other inputs and can be used to initiate a new timing cycle. When RESET goes low, the flip-flop is reset, and the output goes low. When the output is low, a low-impedance path is provided between discharge (DISCH) and ground.
The output circuit is capable of sinking or sourcing current up to 200 mA. Operation is specified for supplies of 5 V to 15 V. With a 5-V supply, output levels are compatible with TTL inputs.

I have put these ICs through their paces with lots of connection mistakes on my breadboard when applying voltage, and they have held up strong without frying on me. I love these little guys and would 100% only buy this particular brand in the future for all my custom circuit builds. Great reliability and performance for general circuit building.

I’ve used this chip since the late 1970s and love it. My most fun use was making a cricket-like sound (using 2) and hiding it up under the office secretary’s chair. It beeped every 18 minutes and drove everyone nuts! She totally ripped apart her typewriter, and pronounced it fixed as she left for the day, only to having it beep minutes later. Also works in alarm systems. Its uses are unlimited. My first use was in Gomco suction machines in Vos Andes Hospital, Quito, Ecuador. Buy...have fun!

This is a must have for any electronic hobbyist as the number of circuits it can be used in is large & more than most I have seen. Tested 2 (did not test all possible functionality) & worked in a test circuit. Anyone doing model railroading can easily make an alternating led flasher circuit with this. All arrived on time, in tact, in proper container, and as specified. Again, for any hobby person this is a must have item as having only this one item can be a source of making a plethora of circuits and is very handy.
