Some reviewers apparently lost an argument with their spouse right before they wrote their review ; ) . Still, I suppose it is better to take things out on an inanimate device in lieu of kicking the dog.This is a perfectly adequate tester, with voltage readings that compare favorably with my Fluke.. For over a year now I have used it for quick checks on several different vehicles, and while some cars were a little cramped for space around their power sockets, I've always been able to get a reading. For those who think a small fitment issue makes this meter "junk", perhaps it is the vehicle that is at fault and therefore "junk" (if you insist on being silly about such matters). Overall, I have found it a handy glove-box gadget, but since my son just made off with mine this evening, I am here to order another one for myself. Not a Fluke, but not "junk". The display could be just a little easier to read, but that is probably my declining visual acuity at work. When it comes to the "alternator test" feature you do need to understand that this is a simplistic voltage based guess at the problem and should be viewed as more of a suggestion than a fact. In other words, don't take the led results too seriously. This applies to all such simple testers and is not a flaw in this device. If you agree with the detractors of this item, the Fluke 1587 makes an excellent "junk free" alternative with all sorts of other nifty features, available here on Amazon for a mere $809.99 ; ) . This unit is great for alternator charging value, but my battery died regardless. I know this device doesn’t display health details, but I relied on the YELLOW and/or RED idiot lights to warn me of imminent failure, which my battery suffered without any warning, thus requiring I buy a new one.If you require battery health status, I recommend a dedicated battery tester connected directly to your battery’s terminals. A driver’s display has yet to be invented for the retail market (as far as I am aware).

Works well, I keep it plugged in my 12 V receptacle as my van does not have a voltage dial indicator. Works well to see if your alternator is charging or what the battery voltage is.

This is a quick way to see if your battery is bad and after you start your car it can tell you your alternators output to see if it is high enough to keep your battery charged . Very simple to use plug it in a cigarette litter or round 12v adapter in your vehicle with car off to check battery level . Picture in middle is battery output right is alternator output now I had to turn my key to on then back to off to get this to come on . Because there is no power to 12v adapters until you cycle the key to start up electronics just turn key to on without starting the vehicle then turn key back to off position to check battery voltage , then start vehicle to check alternator .

Seems accurate and display is easy to read, but ease of use is hampered by internal wiring not long enough for flexible 12V head. Unit stopped working and when investigated, internal wire length was too short and not sufficiently strain relieved to allow proper flex of 12V connector and caused wire to break off a connection. Resoldering was required to restore operation, but wire length and flexibility remains to be a problem that require unnecessary caution during continued use.
