Birch wood butcher block is perfect!! A light sanding with 100 grit sandpaper, and you can urethane it or stain it. Very well made. Couldn't be happier. My husband was going to build a top, and I realized that if his time frame was the same as installing new lock sets on the door, or installing baseboard in a new room, or building the closet (that took 5 years), I would have a plywood top for at least a year. This worked perfectly and I had a countertop in a week!!
