12/20/18 - 17 Staccato Studies for Clarinet by Reginald KellI am a returning clarinetist, returning after decades of life's "interruptions." I really didn't need a book to work on staccato, I could just play anything, staccato. However, I'm glad I got this book. The exercises are melodic and challenging, with some fun arpeggio work. For me, the challenge is in the fingerings--remembering alternate fingerings and when to use them. I'm having such a difficult time with E-flat to C or C# (mid octave) combinations that I don't recall being difficult in the past!On that note, I'm having other difficulties, as a returning clarinetist that I didn't expect. My fingertips are a little fatter than when I was young, so I keep touching the right-hand "banana" key between the middle and ring fingers!--another thing I didn't have difficulties with in my youth. I'm also having thumb and bottom lip pain. Now that, I do remember, except only after long practice sessions. Regardless, I'm having a great time re-learning.I've purchased a lot of music in recent months, ranging from very good to downright crap that I'd consider a rip-off. I think this Kell Staccato book was a quality purchase and I recommend it for mid to advancing Intermediate level players (ABRSM Levels 4, 5, & 6).I received my purchase from ModusMusic and it arrived in a timely manner, in pristine condition. If I remember correctly, the music book was delivered in a large, bubble-lined envelope, with the book sandwiched between very thick card stock. I mention this only because I greatly appreciate the care that some sellers provide to ensure their merchandise arrives in the best condition possible. I did pay $3.99 for shipping, but, to me, it was worth it.I did not receive any compensation for my review. My comments are strictly my own assessments, based on my actual use of a product.
