I was working through the trial and error of building terrible coils and transformers based on my limited knowledge of electrical theory as I tried to self-teach from a textbook and the internet. When I finally figured out what determines the strength of a coil, I sprung for proper supplies (appropriate wire and a magnetic core). This ferrite core ended up working perfectly. I made a very simple 120:240 turns transformer and measured the input and output voltages with a Fluke. 6 volts on the low side produced 12 volts on the high side, successfully lighting a 12v automotive bulb. It was a pretty imprecise experiment so I can't attest to whether this will attain some incredibly specific magnetic conductivity value, but it works.
