24 Inch Machinist Precision Steel Straight Edge Tool

24 Inch Machinist Precision Steel Straight Edge Tool

An engineer’s straight edge can be used to check that an engine block or cylinder head is flat by being placed across its surface.

Machined Straight Edge

By shining a light behind the straight edge, any gaps between the cylinder head surface and straight edge will be visible if they are more than 0.001inch in size.

Straight Edge Bars

Any gaps should then be measured using a feeler gauge.

machinist straight edge

This process has to be repeated across six areas of the cylinder head. If gaps in any area are outside of the permitted tolerance for that engine, then the cylinder head will need resurfacing.

The complimentary feeler gauge help you check distortions in engine blocks, cylinder heads, and flywheels.

A portable case is convenient to carry and store, and can prevent straight edge from being damaged.

I needed this tool on a bad way to check the engine block warpage and don't know why I waited so long to buy it. The wider tool sits better on the block to get a real accurate read with the feeler gauge that came with it.

Well packaged. The storage case is well made and should protect the straight edge. The straight edge is robust and accurate. I used it to check the block and heads on a 2008 Jeep Wrangler.

The straight edge comes wrapped in plastic with an oil film inside the bag to keep it from rusting. The edge comes in a decent plastic case with a set of feeler gauges. I don't have the means to check this straight edge for correctness. I have not gotten to pulling the heads off the engine I bought this for. If straightness is critical for you I would suggest (based on other reviews) to take this edge to a trusted machine shop and have them check your sample. You can then have the edge planed/decked if needed.

I bought this for a head gasket job on my car. Upon opening, it was in a nice case, it seemed well made and very sturdy, i was wrong. I used it to inspect my cylinder head, and thought my head was warped out of limit (same with the block). I took this tool to a machine shop, had it inspected, and come to find out it was the bar that was warped, almost .004” end to end. I borrowed my friend’s straight edge and also had it along with me, verified his was straight, went home and rechecked my head and block. They were fine. This useless “straight edge” almost caused me to have my head and block resurfaced for no reason.Bottom line: This thing is better as a paperweight than a straight edge.
