It detects magnetic fields, AC voltage, and EMF.Detection of magnetic fields is pretty cool, but I can't think of an actual use for it. What exactly does one need to know the existence of magnetic fields for? I suppose it might be useful if you are battling Magneto or something, but I don't really need it.The AC voltage detection is essentially the same thing you get in a non-contact voltage meter that you can use to tell if a line is live or not before you poke at it. Pretty 'meh'.Now, the EMF detection is what I was interested in. It can detect EMF (actually RF) from 50MHz to 3.5GHz, which should technically give you the ability to detect wifi networks. I am in a congested area and wanted to use it to find out which direction signals were coming from so I could attenuate them, but this thing is not nearly sensitive enough to do that, plus it won't detect 5GHz networks, and it is only single axis so you can't actually use it to pinpoint which direction the signal is originating from. Since the lower end is 50MHz, it also makes it useless for detecting NFC/RFID readers.I took a look inside, and it is using 3 through hole inductors in different positions for the magnetic field detection, and just a straight hunk of metal for the RF. I can't imagine how one would tune an antenna be sensitive in such a broad range of frequencies, so I guess a hunk of metal is good enough. It uses MZP0327 op-amps and a GCA7660AP charge pump to give the negative rail on for them. Super basic circuit. It also rubs me the wrong way that the meter starts out at 'Safe' at 0 and any detection of anything is therefore de facto 'Not safe'.If you want to detect ghosts, or think EMF from wifi is harming you, you might want to consult an exorcist or a psychologist, and not waste your money on this meter.
