Bought as alternative to piecemeal rebuild of a peerless tecumseh 700-013a transmission for my old school Scag 48 inch belt-drive walk behind mower. This transmission was half the price of rebuilt peerless on eBay and fit like a charm. It’s a four speed just like the one I replaced, but I believe the 700-023 and 700-026 would have been excellent alternatives in the five speed categories. After much research, it seems that most of these peerless transmissions are similar. Make sure you know how many splines are on the output shafts ( 9 vs 36), how the shifter attaches ( bolt vs nut), how the input pulley is secured ( retaining ring vs screw) and whether you need a 4 or a 5 speed. After matching these variables, you should be good to go. This item matched the description exactly ( though I would call this a 36 spline output rather than input, but I see it called both on lawncare forums). It literally took 20 minutes to unbolt the old transmission and insert this one. Now I’m back to mowing. Second gear seems to be same ratio as my old transmission. It is slightly harder to move the shift lever, but that’s more likely due to the old transmission being worn from decades of use. The detents for the various speeds seem very distinct, unlike my old worn out transmission that was often a guess as to whether it was in gear or not. So far, I’ve only had it a few days, and mowed only a few acres. I will update if issues arise over time. But as of now, I’m pleased with the performance and quality. I’m so glad there is a cheaper alternative to the OEM transmission at a fraction of the cost to keep these old, but still solid, machines running.
