A starter pinion gear interfaces with a mower's flywheel. Flywheels are made of metal. Always. Pinion gears should likewise be made of metal. Plastic pinion gears simply don't hold up. Oh, they work fine for a while, but then they wear down to a jagged nub. A metal pinion gear for this application will set you back about twice as much as a plastic substitute but will last ten times as long.
