About this item

  • Double 8.4v / 4.2v lithium rechargeable single. Input voltage: 5-18V DC power supply (actual 5-12V is appropriate); Current: 1A-2A
  • The TP5100 is a switching step-down dual-cell 8.4V/single-cell 4.2V Li-ion battery charge management module.
  • The TP5100 has a wide input voltage range of 5V-18V and charges the battery in three stages: trickle pre-charge, constant current, and constant voltage. The trickle pre-charge current and constant current charge current are adjusted by external resistors, and the maximum charge current is up to 2A.
  • TP5100 has built-in input over-current and undervoltage protection, chip over-temperature protection, short-circuit protection, battery temperature monitoring, and battery reverse connection protection.
  • TP5100 charging management power supply module suitable for portable devices, various chargers, smart phones, tablets, power tools, walkie-talkies, etc.

On receiving these, I Immediately tested them with 12V input.3 were DOA; one followed within 30 seconds. I've had the same issue with many of these chinese BOGM(Buy one get many) deals before (which I expect), but never to this degree.By any standard, a 66% failure rate is ludicrous. It's getting to where it's BOGMKOO2 (Buy one get many, keep one or two).

In charging a single 18650 battery from 3.6V, which is considered to be 30% charged, the charge rate ranged between 0.9 amp to 1.2 amp for all 6 modules tested. I was able to get about 1.5 amp charge rate when a cell was at 2.6V (considered 0.0% charged). I was not able to get a 2.0 amp charge rate on any of the modules. The charge rate decreased as the battery reaches full charge ranging between .0.7amp to 0.4amps above 3.8V. At 4.2V, the current was 0.05amps.Reversing the voltages on the input and output on one module (by mistake) caused some smoke. After powering back up, the module charged at the same rate as previously and showed no signs of damage. Of course, it could have affected the long-term life of the module.According to the spec, there should be 0.1V across the two parallel 0.1 ohm current sense resistors giving a 2amp charge rate (0.1V/0.05). I only measured about 0.07V when the current was 1.4amps. I was also able to lower the charge rate to 0.28amp by removing the 2 parallel SMD resistors and replacing them with 0.25 ohms (0.07/0.25). See attached image.I may have gotten a bad batch, but there is a newer version of the TP5100 available that may have solved the low current problem (Search for Vaico T5100 video for details). Otherwise, the modules work but at a much lower charge rate than 2.0amps.
