As a shade tree mechanic this is the ideal mechanic's stethoscope for my use. I will more than repay myself on the first confirmed serpentine belt tensioner I diagnose and repair myself. Professionals might want to spend a little more for higher end product if they use it every day, but this one is perfect for me. It's comfortable, ear pieces fit well and spring tension is just right (others have complained), and it is 'loud', so be careful probing around moving parts or very noisy assemblies. Someone mentioned the mechanical connection with the extension tip threads were bad, the one I got fit well but seized in place (Maybe by design) and I could not unscrew the extension after initial finger-tight assembly. That's ok, I wont loose the tip this way, the threads are likely metric, but it wouldn't take a genius mechanic/machinist to rethread probe sections and make a new coupling if that was ever necessary. It is a mechanic/machinist's too after all. jb upstate ny

This was a great buy. I initially had a hard time keeping it on but after twisting the metal ear inserts, they fit snug. I was able to diagnose a noise in my Dodge Magnum that I had for over a year. Pep Boys auto repair, AAMCO, and a local shop called Lam Auto and Big-O tires all had no clue what was making the clicking noise as it couldn't be heard from the engine bay but only from inside the vehicle with your windows up.I pulled off my serpentine belt and started the vehicle and the noise was gone. I manually rotated all the wheels and they all spun freely and quietly. I then purchased this stethoscope and found that the noise came from my A/C compressor and the noise resonated through the the lines and inside the cabin.The correct way to use this is to not have your hand on the metal probe or you will dampen the sound. Do not push too hard against the surface as the rod is attached to a diaphragm which the vibration of the probe gets transferred to your ears. This is the reason why the probe moves in and out and has lots of play.

My BF used it on my 2012 Scion xB. He said it was comfortable and he was able to hear very well with it. Since I am sure I wont use it in the future, he bought it from me.

The price is great, but you're probably better off spending a few more dollars for a higher quality stethoscope. This one feels flimsy, and the probe constantly shakes inside the plastic housing. The shaking and shifts come through on the earpieces, and sometimes make it difficult to hear what's going on unless you hold the stethoscope still with both hands.

Tried it just after delivery, liked its sensitivity to sound and think it will work just fine. I think the buds on the earpiece could be larger and be more comfortable.
