Product Description

Air King's BFQ90 High Performance Snap-In exhaust fan provides effective ventilation at budget friendly pricing without sacrificing quality. The durable high impact plastic housing ensures quiet operation and maximum performance. The unique Snap-In installation system includes a bracket that is mounted to the ceiling joist, then the fan housing "snaps" into place with one click. No more struggling with trying to line up the traditional hanger bars or trying to hold the fan in place while nailing it into place. The white, low profile plastic grill is unobtrusive and complements almost all decors. The BFQ90 is listed for installation over a tub or shower on a GFCI circuit allowing it to be installed inside a shower stall. HVI Certified for sound and airflow. Perfect for use in mid size to larger bathrooms or laundry rooms.

From the Manufacturer

What makes the Air King high performance bath fan series unique is the UL listed molded high impact plastic housing that provides multiple benefits. "Traditional" bath fan housings are fabricated from steel which involves bending and welding. This is a more expensive process and over the life of the fan welds can break, causing the fan to operate much louder or even with a rattling sound. Metal housings reverberate and echo noise. Because the Air King high performance bath fan series is in an all plastic housing, there are no welds to break and the plastic is a natural sound absorbent material. If you live anywhere near salt water, or the unit will be used in high moisture areas, this fan is an almost must. The UL listed molded high impact plastic housing will not rust, giving the unit a longer life. The high performance exhaust fan series features a unique snap-in installation system. The 4-Inch plastic duct collar with back draft damper insures quiet operation and prevents drafts from entering the room. Exhaust capacity for rooms of approximately 90 to 115 square feet. Meets ASHRAE 62.2 specifications for Local Exhaust. Quality Air King products are always the right choice!

I replaced the fan in the first floor bathroom that was originally installed over 20 years ago by the contractor. This was always a noisy fan that moved almost no air. I took a chance on getting this Air King fan sight unseen since I was pretty sure almost anything would be better than the fan I already had.I had to enlarge the existing hole by about an inch on two sides to accommodate the fan housing. I nailed the bracket to the joist using a small sledge. I was cramped for room since my fan sits in the corner of the bathroom and I was not able to get much "muscle" into my hammer blows with a light hammer. I positioned the fan up into the hole and pushed it to one side so I could attach the duct. Then I pushed it over to the other side to give me room to push the wiring into the housing.I snapped the fan in place and was disappointed that the fan drooped about an inch below the ceiling on the side away from the bracket. I had to move the fan housing aside and bend the bracket downward so that when I snapped the fan in it would be held tighter. That was an annoyance but it seems to be holding OK. The fan still droops a bit but it is not noticeable at all once the grille is snapped into place. The grille hugs the ceiling closely on all sides, so it looks just fine.During the installation I was very wary because at least one reviewer was adamant that one could not install this fan without getting above it in the attic or making the hole extra large. I found no need for that at all. As long as you have sufficient room to move the fan housing to one side or the other inside the opening you can make power and duct connections through the hole in the ceiling. Then you have to work the fan into position so it can drop through the hole a bit while you catch it on the bracket lip and then push it up to snap it in place. If my duct had been rigid I could see where there might be a complication, but I used metal flexible duct. Even so, I'm not sure that rigid duct would have been that hard to work with on installing the fan, so I am unclear why some have had a problem with this. The fan works like a charm. I was hoping it would be a little quieter (actually I was hoping for near silence) but it is much quieter than the fan I replaced. I think some of the noise is just the sound of the air moving. I could not resist seeing if a paper towel would be held up tightly by the air pressure and it was. I think if I actually had 4-inch ducting all along the path it would be quieter. I believe the transition from 4-inch to 3-inch creates some back pressure. Anyway, the noise is not obnoxious it is just that you will know the fan is on that's for sure.I believe if you want a super quiet fan you are just going to have to pay the bucks for it. I did lustily eye those Panasonics, but they were just too much for me to bear cost-wise. Also, it looked like they would be a major pain to install if you could not get to the fan from above.I am happy with this fan. I think the motor alone is worth the price of the fan. It certainly looks like a quality item. So even though I am complaining that it not as quiet as I'd like, for the price I have no complaint at all. I am giving this fan 5 stars because it is more than one would expect for the price and it is very well made.(I also installed the similar Air King 140cfm model in a larger bathroom. That fan is rated at 4 Sones and is pretty loud. That fan is connected to a 4-inch duct without reducers so the noise is all within the fan and not my duct. It moves a lot of air and it is still quieter than the original cheap fan ever was while moving perhaps 4 times as much air (my guess).)

I wanted a fan that had good air movement, quiet, and was not too expensive. Some are prettier than others, and this fan is nothing fancy by looks, but it is a great working fan. The fans at the box stores are so marked up. Don't waist your money. If anything just go there to test out fan for noise and light if needed and then order that model online. I bought this one due to its price, air movement, and quietness. Was not sure if it would be just as loud as the old one or wouldn't get moisture out of the bathroom. So I installed this new one. It took awhile (going up and down out of atic) but all replacement fans would take the same amount of time. So I fliped the switch, it was so quiet compared to the old one. When I say quiet, I don't mean it doesn't have any noise, but the noise it has is just soft white background noise. To test air flow rate.... Place a kleenex on the fan unflolded flat when running. If the Kleenex is sucked onto fan and doesn't fall you have proper CFM, if not it isn't really doing anything. I did the test on the air king and it sucked the Kleenex with no problem, never fell to the ground. The best test of all......With old exaust fan, when taking a shower in a small space, afterwards moisture would be all over walls and cabinets (heavy very visible moisture). I would have to wipe down the walls after showering. With this air king fan, not one drop of moisture and I even had to check the switch to see if I had it on (due to quietness). For the price I ordered another one for another bathroom. So I got two great fans for the price of one lower rated fan. Get the fan. Trust me I did an obsessive amount of research becasue I once bought a fan, installed it after a few hours, turned on the fan and found it wasn't any better than my old one. So don't make the mistake and waste your time intalling a crap fan, waste your time putting in a great working fan like this air king.

Installed, the fan is quiet with only air movement noise, no hum or rattle. A huge improvement over the rattle trap fan that came with the house. Took about 2 hours to install which included clearing the blown-in insulation, removing the old fan and a half dozen trips in and out of the attic for tools.Instructions say to draw a mark around the fan housing from above, cut the drywall along those lines, nail or screw the bracket to a ceiling joist and snap the fan into the bracket from below. Sounds simple but I couldn't figure any way to do that because the outlet nozzle extends well beyond the hole you just cut. I considered removing the nozzle, which snaps into the fan housing, but decided to install the fan from above. That worked without deforming the bracket. Maybe the fan should ship with the outlet nozzle unattached but you'd still need to go into the attic to snap it in place. The molded plastic housing is heavy and rigid and the motor looks to be a major quality improvement over the usual cheap motors supplied with low cost fans. It's a bargain at the price it sells for! If not for the tricky install, I'd rate it 5 stars.Update. In fairness, the instructions say to snap the fan body into the bracket from below ONLY for new construction. For existing construction they make no mention of below or above. Truly, once the hole is cut and bracket installed, from above is the only practical way unless you significantly enlarge the hole ... not a good idea. In fact I sealed the gap around the hole with duct tape to prevent air and insulation leakage past the fan body.

My old bathroom fan gave up the ghost so I bought this one and it fit perfectly into the whole and I could attach the hose from the vent no problem.
