Just bought a used car to discover the oil drain hole and plug threads were damaged, but not completely stripped. I did some YouTube research and decided to try a "thread chaser" before a "thread tap". What I learned is the "thread chaser" is less aggressive and is more suitable for repairing damaged threads. A "thread tap" is more suitable when the threads are completely damaged/stripped and you need to cut new threads.I confirmed the diameter and pitch of the oil drain plug and purchased this thread chaser. Oil was still dripping from the drain hole as I was using the chaser. The dripping oil kept the thread chaser lubricated while I was using it and pushed debris out of the oil pan.I started the thread chaser by hand until I could tighten it no further. Then I used a socket and tightened 1/2 turn and then backed out 1/4 turn. I repeated this process several times and then backed the chaser out all the way to remove any debris. I didn't want debris getting into the oil pan. I repeated the above process many times until all the threads of the thread chaser disappeared into the oil pan. I then replaced the thread chaser with the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug screwed into the oil pan perfectly with almost zero play. I then torqued the oil drain plug to factory specs. After several days, the oil drain plug is still on tight and not dripping any oil.

I got this to "clean" the thread of a spark plug hole after removing another one. I added a little bit of white lithium grease for lubrication and to keep any metal debris from falling inside the cylinder. It worked like a charm! Definitely saved the day!

I think some of these other reviews may be expecting miracles out of beyond repair situations. If you're grounded in reality, this inexpensive thread chaser will be useful and last for several projects if used properly.

I purchased this to chase the spark plug on my Subaru H6 middle plug. The spark plugs on these engines (like most now) are buried deep into the head. After lifting the engine up enough to clear the frame, I was able to get a clear path to chase the threads. Unfortunately, there were no threads left to clear up due to PO running engine with plug only retained by coil pack. The clearance of this design is perfect, I just can't verify how effective it would work on less damaged threads.

Used this to clean up spark plug holes on 1988 Nissan D21 Hardbody 3.0L V6 SOHC. Truck had been sitting for a good while and the plugs hadn't been out in who know how long so the holes were pretty corroded. Originally tried using the spark plugs to clean the threads. Waste of time. Spend the $15 and get this tool. It has clean out slots similar to a tap and works well. I used some WD-40 with mine and it only took a couple minutes per hole to have them back to very good condition. Uses 3/8 drive ratchet or extension which is convenient.
