The taylor-shaped block of carbon can be used both dry and wet, dipped into water, or applied with a brush! This versatility allows for a wide range of tones (from gray to deep black, transparent to opaque!) as well as an extraordinary diversity of line.

Love using this to sketch out painting. Great quality. Easy to use. Mixes well with water when desired. Size is easy to use. Color is great. Great value for money!

Looks good, but have not used it yet. When I do, I'll add review.

Beautiful product, essentially a sumi ink stick that doesn't require grinding. Offers a wide range of shades for controlled ink-brush drawings and calligraphy, and is at least partly erasable (depending on the paper) for special effects or fixing minor mistakes. Works best when applied in a single layer (self confidence required!) since multiple layers can feather or run, though this is minimized on certain papers. I tried it on Arches 140 lb HP watercolor, Arches 300 lb. HP watercolor, Stonehenge drawing paper, Canson Mi Tientes colored drawing paper, Strathmore Toned Gray, and Strathmore 400 Bristol. Best results were with the Stonehenge paper for fine detail and multiple layers; worst results were with the Arches HP.

Mine arrived broken. I can still use it, but a bit harder to use.

I love this charcoal , but I use it just like a watercolor as other reviewers had noted.A light pencil sketch followed by a wash with this product ( little water and WC brush) can make a quick value image.I use an altoid tin to hold the disk to travel with .
