HOW TO USE
Connect
Red clip to positive terminal of battery, black clip to negative terminal of battery, connect largest clip to #1 spark plug
Switch on Engine
Aim at Target
Aim timing light at the crankshaft scale of the pulley and pull the trigger
Check
Check timing
Will Work on Diesel Engines？
No
Diesel vehicles do not have spark plugs or distributor, so this timing lights will not work on diesel engines
Will Work on 6-Volt System？
Yes
On 6-volt electrical systems, use an auxiliary 12-volt battery to power timing light. Connect BLACK clip to negative (-) post and RED clip to positive (+) post on auxiliary 12- volt batter

This timing light stopped working after one use I strongly suggest spending a little more for a better quality product.

I had to laugh at the rating for "light weight". Of course it gets five stars- this thing has nothing in it but a random blinking light! (sarc). So, for the technical aspect of this piece of equipment: It is a piece of junk- But what do I know? I have only been working on cars for 50 years (back when timing lights were a REQUIRED tool in every mech tool box). This thing jumps all over the place with the timing- the light flashes WAY too many times per crank revolution. The timing mark on the balancer was never in the same place twice. Save your money and spend more for a quality unit. I just wish I had not sold all my tools because I had a really nice one from Sears- when Sears used to be good... ***Sigh*** Obviously I miss the 'good old days' ha ha

My initial review was one star and asserted that the inductive pick-up was garbage. The strobe would stop firing above 1,800 RPMs. I was testing this with my 1976 BMW motorcycle with brand new plug wires.I decided to give this another try after re-reading the instructions. I may have had the pickup attached backwards. There's a fairly difficult to see arrow on the pick-up, which should point towards the spark plug. I put that on the right way around in my second attempt and the light now works much better.However, this is still a 3 star product. I find the strobe to be very inconsistent at idle, more consistent as you raise the RPMs. I tested this side by side with an old SnapOn timing light. The SnapOn was super consistent at all RPM ranges.Conclusion: this timing light is "serviceable", but not great. For the price I guess you are getting a decent value. It is pretty hard to get a clear reading at idle though. I would not recommend it.
