This is the third item of similar type we have bought. This one works (unlike the others) and includes a working remote and also a sound function. The cords to the laser and sensor are way too short to cover a decent size area while also mounting the digital readout in a useful place. However, we were easily able to splice in 25 feet of extra wire on each line and find that the laser works well at most any range up to 25 feet or so. The one thing that would improve this counter would be to have a programmable delay function to prevent over counting of irregular or moving items (like people).
