Solid wood and comes well sealed* (appreciated that since it's going to be used for fermenting vegetables).I'll apply mineral oil to the end before the first use and although I don't expect this to last forever (it might), it's a nice design for tamping vegetables.Appreciate that by increasing the surface area on the food end (some of these are just flat or rounded), it's a bit harder to keep clean and there's a greater chance that the wood might split someday ... especially if it's never seasoned with something like mineral oil or beeswax. It's 12 inches long. For fermenting, that's a great length. If you want something wider than approximately 1-5/8" (this will be particularly good for jars), I'd use some sort of potato masher.*The packaging dilemma: I'm trying to get away from plastic packaging so I don't have to throw it away: How do resolve this dilemma - for any packaging - especially food related?

I use the muddler mostly for mushing up fruit for drinks, but also tried on crushing up dried spices and works great! It is very sturdy, easy to rinse and wipe clean after use, and no issues with it

This is by far the best muddler I’ve used. The added length is great for added pressure and avoids hitting your fingers on mix jar rim

I have been making my own mojitos this summer since the mint is growing in the yard! I bought a metal muddler and was not very impressed. I ordered the wooden muddler and must say that I like it better than the metal one!

Like the burly nature of smashing my carnita meat for Mexican dishes. Muy Bueno!
