I was looking forward to getting Bear Grylls Ultimate Survival Tool, but what I really received was an okay shovel and a decent knife blade/saw that is awkward to install and use.I like a good shovel and this one is good, although short. Having it while camping is good because you should always have a specific set of tools when camping including a shovel, a knife, a small saw, screwdrivers and a hammer. So this gave us the shovel, but the rest we satisfied with other tools we have at home. The saw in this Bear Grylls kit is a small saw on the backside of the knife blade and while it is sharp, it’s not as easy to use as my small pruning saw that we keep in our camping gear.If push came to shove and this was the only tool I had while stuck in the outdoors , I could make everything work to my advantage, but given a choice, I wouldn’t be stuck with this tool.

I really wanted to give this more stars, but I can't.It does work okay. The pieces are easy to put together. The shovle doesn't seem super sturdy. If you don't tighten it enough, it does nothing but flop around. Trying to figure out what some of the other pieces do requires the directions.Wish this came with a holder for both both pieces that you end up with. Would make it easier to keep together.I mean, it may help save me, but it's just awkward to use and carry. I would like to give this 2.75 stars.

This survival shovel is pretty cool. It reminds me of the Rambo style survival knives that were so popular in the 80s and 90s but much more robust and useful. The only thing that isn't great in this set is the instructions, which are not very descriptive or helpful. On this note, I strongly recommend paying close attention to where each piece goes as you pull out all the tools. It's not entirely obvious where the knife and screwdriver tip should be stored...The shovel itself is surprisingly sturdy. The material appears to be decent quality steel, and it's very thick. The saw-like part of its edge isn't very sharp, but that's because it's a scraper, not a saw! The saw is on the back of the knife blade, which is inside one of the handles. Another part of the edge is sharpened and is supposed to serve as an axe. The blade is hefty but not hefty enough to make chopping wood easy. I would say this "axe" will help split up some small pieces of firewood and would be great for stripping bark or smoothing a wood surface. Also, the shovel and therefore axe blade is curved, so you can't pound on the side opposite the axe blade like a chisel. Fortunately, the saw on the knife blade is short but super sharp. It will help you get your firewood to the length you want if you can't chop it.The mechanism to lock the shovel in the digging position is simple but strong. With the shovel unfolded, an orange-anodized aluminum collar is threaded up against the shovel head base to lock it in position. It can be locked straight (typical shovel setup) or in an angled hoe position. IMPORTANT NOTE: the orange threaded collar has LEFT-HAND thread. It's very confusing. You can figure it out easily if the thing is loose, but if it's tight, you probably would tighten it much more before figuring out you were turning it in the wrong direction. So to modify my previous statement, with this knowledge, the mechanism is simple - without, maybe not so simple. It's pretty cool that the shovel has some nut shapes cut out, so you can use it as a wrench (if you have room for a giant wrench, of course). The phillips and flat head screwdriver tips are a nice touch, though I wouldn't use the screwdriver mode for anything really stuck - the screwdriver bit goes into a piece of plastic with a 1/4" hexagonal hole, not metal. But it's pretty strong and should work for most tasks. There is a glass breaker built into one of the handle sections, too, so this would be a good thing to have handy in your car.The shovel head has a black nylon cover that does not cover the handle part attached to the shovel. The other two parts of the handle go into a separate black nylon storage pouch. You can kind of fold these together, but it would have been nice if it were one storage pouch, or at least to have a strap to wrap around the two parts and lock them together.Overall, this is a pretty robust set of survival tools. There are a few details that aren't polished, like the storage arrangement for the small parts and the two-instead-of-one nylon storage pouches, but these are minor details. I will be keeping this set in my car just in case.

This is an excellent tool to have in your camping or bug out bag. All the various pieces are essentials for survival if you're ever lost. Made very well. Good quality material. Worth the price in my opinion.

Smaller than I thought but also compact for backpack. Decent quality.
