The 173 Quad Gate/Multiples is an essential utility module for my system. I use it on almost every patch. The thing is that the multiples appear to be active and not passive as they might imply. For instance, when I plug the trigger from the MIDI into one input then two outputs to envelope triggers, I discovered something. If the source doesn’t go into the very first input on the left of the row, only one EG will trigger. I got quite frustrated until I figured out why one EG wasn’t working. Therefore, keeping that in mind, any time you want multiples, use the source on the far left jack. Also, this will not work to gang oscillators. Even using the source on the left input, when you send patches to the two VCOs, they are okay until you go up a few octaves. Then it loses tune as the voltages bump into each other and sum incorrectly. For this case, you have to use the active mixer on the 297 module backward to get the oscillators to stay in tune. By this I mean the control voltage is plugged into the output of the mixer and the two oscillators plugged into the inputs. Weird but it works, telling me the mixer is active both ways.Overall, this is a very handy module and I wish I had room for two.

It's a passive 'mult' which gives you an additional array of ins and outs to extend the functionality of other modules.Passive means that there is signal loss the more interactions you put on that particular row/channel. However, if you plug the last connector in the row, into the mixer, it will amplify the signal. Its an underrated module, which is extremely valuable for the creation of multi sourced and modulated sounds, -per channel of which you get 6.I never use the gates on it so I cant really review that part.

TIL that not all powered multiples are buffered. Essentially what that means is that this module can't be used to multiply pitch information (V/Oct). If you try, the voltage will drop with each additional signal you add. And it's not constant drops either, so you can't tune to accommodate. For how big this module is, and the fact that it requires a power slot, I don't feel it's worth the space it takes up. That being said, the switched gates are pretty dope. I kind of wish I didn't have to pull it out. Still a great deal if you need passive multiples or switch gates, just don't expect to multiply pitches.

After a good deal of reading, YouTube videos and research, I finally got this one patched correctly. I wasn't that impressed by it. The good thing, strangely enough, is the large area of mults. Another of my stand-alone mults if very thin and difficult to get my fingers in to patch it.
