This worked fantastic to trace and increase the size of an image for my metal plasma cutter lawn art project.

Even though its metal, item is very flimsy and hard to control.

First, it is substantial with engraved aluminum arms, brass and stainless steel fixtures, instructions are helpful. As another reviewer noted it has a tendency to get sloppy which reduces accuracy. However I took an easier approach to make it work better: I went to Lowes & got some 8-32 & 6-32 knurled brass thumb nuts, some #6&8 nylon washers, slightly longer 6-32 stainless steel bolts, also some #8 brass washers. By putting the nylon washers in between the aluminum bars, reduced friction, so I put brass washers on either side, with the extra nut to lock the screws at a tight enough setting for accuracy, yet movable, maintaining parallel architecture (reduces twisting) it is now easier to use accurately. Mostly the joints have to be tight enough to eliminate sloppiness yet free enough to move. I think total additional cost about $5, more or less, enjoy! You will have to drill out the holes in the center for the #6 bolts, the original ones were #4-40, kind of hard to find so that is why the modifications are necessary, still a great machine.

I do like that it is made out of metal. Did watch a video how to use and with a little practice work very well, just keep check on the thumb nuts keeping them snug.

I was excited to receive this for Christmas, but can’t seem to make it work properly, nor does the engineer who’s trying to figure it out. Had to cut apart a pencil since there was no lead included, and instructions are minimal. It is impossible to keep the screws tight. I doubt they fit properly. Very disappointing.

As other reviewers have pointed out, the brass nuts don't hold and the bolts are too small. I din't feel like replacing all of the parts and re-drilling the holes so I returned it and got the Alvin, which I am very happy with.

I give this pantograph one star because if a drawing is carefully traced multiple times the pantograph will produce copies that differ by much more than the width of a pencil line. The reason is that the diameters of the bolts that hold the arms together are less than the diameters of the holes through which they pass. These loose fitting bolts allow the arms to jiggle around as a drawing is being traced. Tightening the bolts doesn't help because the movement of the arms works to loosens the bolts. Here is how I improved this pantograph: I went to a local Sears hardware store and bought a tap and drill combo set for 12-24NC bolts. It cost about $5. The drill size is larger than either of the two hole sizes used in the pantograph arms. The larger size was needed to allow a close fit between the bolt and pantograph arm. With the pantograph set to produce copies enlarged by the factor I wanted, I removed the bolts one at a time, drilled out the hole, tapped it, and threaded in a 12-24NC bolt. This was done for each bolt except the one that held the pencil lead. After filing a point on the bolt used as pointer, this pantograph now produces enlargements much more accurately than the original one.Shame on the manufacturer for producing such an inferior product. Especially since it would have been so easy to make one that worked well. I doubt anyone in the company ever tested this product.
