Plastic junky pots, seeds, instructions, and tools you won’t get to use for a few years. You could buy a 3-5 year old shaped bonsai for about $10 more

This Bonsai starter kit comes with everything you'll need to get started. The instructions are clear and materials are of great quality. The pots and temporary so doesn't matter too much. This will get you started and the challenge is whether you can take care of it properly or not.

After I put the sign a few weeks later visible mold started appearing at the base. After I removed the sign and visible mold a few weeks later the mold has spreader everywhere so I had to throw it all away

The set up is very simple, and the kit comes with a very detailed guide on how to grow the trees. You have everything you will need in the kit including little garden tools, but you will need to purchase a larger planter for the final transplant once the trees are large enough. We are on round 3 with the seedlings, nothing unusual, it happens in gardening all the time.In the first round nothing germinated, second round we got about 5 seedlings sprouting three of one type and two of the other. We kept getting mold on the soil even though we were making sure the soil was only moist; the booklet said it was normal just to brush it away, but all of those eventually died within a week. The seedlings in the picture are almost 3 weeks old, we have not seen mold this time, we baked the soil before planting this time, we also added a little sand to the peat moss this time to help with drainage and are using a spray bottle to mist the soil lightly when it's dry. Looking forward to watching them grow.
