I've been looking at this thing for a couple of years now and waiting for someone to write a good review of it. I had assumed that since it is made by "Boss" that it would surely sound like something you could buy from Pep Boys or Autozone (not good), but I was wrong. The Pyramid CR79G it replaced was that though. I have a 1997 Tacoma with a cheepskate DIY four-way which consists of a JVC KDA815 ($75 shipped on Ebay), a 200w RMS 10" powered MTX sub ($89 shipped from Amazon) , a Pioneer 35w x 4 amp and Clarion 50w x 4 amp ($110 for both, Craigslist).Midbass is currently handled by Polk SR6500 6.75" in the doors ($60 used from Ebay in 2006, will be replaced with Dayton RS180-4s, as soon as they are back in stock), midrange by the 4" from the top of the line JL Audio 3-way set* ($40 used from Ebay in 2006) mounted in Q-logic kick panels ($200+ from Crutchfield in 2006 - DO NOT BUY THESE, they are awfull) and Vifa D26NC55 tweeters I got for $1 each on Ebay from the M&K bankruptcy liquidation. I sealed the door holes with plexi-glass and deadened them with Frost King foam/foil Duct insulation from Lowes. So for this to work I need two bandpass XOs, one for midbass and one for midrange. The JVC has front, rear and sub 5V pre-outs with a lowpass on the sub and a highpass for front/rear. I connected the sub out to the MTX and the front/rear to the front/rear inputs on the BX55, so it gets the highpass from the JVC at 62hz. The sub outputs on the BX55 go to the Clarion and it is bridged to power the Polks, so there is my midbass bandpass - 62 to about 850. The bandpass for the mids is set at 1000-4200, and I have the tweets at 4600 up. I had previously tried various passive XOs to bandpass the mids (the Pyramid has only a highpass) but was never happy with the sound.Whether the Boss really has 9V (!!!) out or not I can't say, but I can say that its signal is much stronger than my old XO, so I got to turn the gains down on my amps. And that there is less distortion at high volumes now, and the the unit added no noise to the system that I can hear. I can also say that the XO points work as they are supposed to. This thing is a really good buy at this price.*I recently took the JL/Qform kicks out and tried some satellites from the Altec Lansing ADA890 computer speakers in their place velcroed to the stock kick panels. Ghetto I know but the sound is much better than the JLs pointed at the trans tunnel could ever hope to do. I cut the tweet wires, wired the two 3" paper and foam drivers for a for a 4ohm load and stuffed the little cubes with polyfill. The four drivers get 17 watts each and sound suprisingly good in this bandwidth. They consist of two cubes slightly twisted so one points at one seat and the other points at the opposite seat. They were free. They play much nicer now that they are crossed higher than the 400 that the Pyramid allowed.

I purchased this unit because I needed true, fine tunable 3 way crossover capability and this Boss BX55 was the only one that had all the features I required, the main one being fully adjustable frequency points with the mids set up in a BANDPASS configuration. An added bonus feature which I have found now to be practically indispensable is the wired bass remote which not only controls the level, but also the "Q" setting. This is a great feature. Plus the all metal sturdy housing, logical layout, and great value for the price, I am extremely happy with the Bx55.

The unit is very good for the cost however it seems that it allows frequency leaks which caused it to lose a star in the rating because due to this its not a precise as I would like I can't completely cut high end from my mid-bass speakers and the front high pass seems to cut most of the bass out no matter how low I set the high pass but this could by the loop ground filter I installed which is known to case midbass issues but I don't notice any noise even from my mid-bass speakers without the ground loop filter which is nice as that seems to be a common complaint hereThat said it does its job and does it well the difference in sound puts me at a loss of words my thought is the people that complained about sound/noise issues don't know how to set something like this correctly, this wont well well if you also don't put in speakers that match how you set the crossover and with full range 3/4 ways your not going to notice much difference, in fact, might even sound worse depending on the rest of your speakersThe major reason I got this was the rear speaker bandpass and while it doesn't allow as precise control as I would like I would argue that is what made the most difference in sound as I didn't have a passive crossover on my rears and they are built for midbass, not full rangeThe way I have it set up is a pair of tweeters and 6 .5 3 ways for front speakers the tweeters have a passive crossover and the 3 ways are set to play 250 Hz and up and 8 inch rear midbass speakers set to play 65 - 300 Hz and two 12s set to play 70 and down the key is to set a small overlap to prevent frequency gaps but set the overlap in an area that both sets of speakers can play well and just because you can turn up gains doesnt mean you shouldYou should also use good RCA cables you dont need top of the line but at the very least car audio RCA but prefered twisted cable, cars have so much interference that without good shielding you are going to get noiseI also don't seem to have grounding issues, the reason I have a ground loop filter installed is my aftermarket stereos whole case is grounded and metal so the RCAs slightly touch the case causing a ground loop there wasn't anything I could do to change it, it was a design flaw but I don't seem to be having any issues with this it seems to be well designed in that regard as the way I have it hooked up is temporary till I can run a dedicated line so at the moment its grounded off my bass amp which is bad and prone to cause ground issues so the fact I don't have any shows qualityI have not used nor plan on using the remote so I cannot comment on that part I already have my sub amps remoted mounted in an unused oem location so it looks stock and don't feel like messing with the remote for this and don't seem much point in even tryingAll in all one of the best mods I've done for my car and well worth it, I would strongly recommend this for anyone trying to make an audiophile quality sound system on a budget

This replaced a Lanzar 3 way cross over on my boat. I originally purchased a replacement Lanzar, but it was defective out of the box. I contacted Amazon and they sent me a replacement overnight. That unit too was bad out of the box. I decided it was best to try the Boss system and I am glad I did. Works perfectly.This unit sounds better and was easy to install.
