It’s taken some time to figure out how to keep this from being too hot for my sourdough starter. This is what I do (see picture) and it works very well. Since I wasn’t sure how the pad would work I didn’t get the adjustable thermostat. I think if I were to order again I would do that since this pad gets to its max temp and stays there. I may decide to get it as an add on if the price is right. If you are struggling to get your sourdough starter or bread dough to rise in a cold kitchen this works great.

Purchased this fermentation pad because I was having some difficulties getting my sourdough to rise properly in the colder months but didn’t want to buy a $100 proofing box, and this does exactly what I need it to do. The first time I put my starter on it I think it might have been too much for it though it does stay between 72-78 degrees, it didn’t kill my starter but it might have been a little too warm for it. So I now put a towel below the mat and on top of the mat then put some sort of a bowl (I use a pie plate) and put about an inch of water in the bowl and place the bowl on top of the towel on the mat and put my starter or dough in whatever bowl I’m letting it rise in in the water. I periodically will check the water temp and it’s normally always at 75 degrees. Since I have done this, every starter feed and every bulk rise is textbook perfect. Bubbly starter, airy bread. The other great thing about it is it doesn’t take up a lot of room so if you don’t bake all the time, you can easily store it in a cabinet or drawer. This fermentation pad receives a sourdough stamp of approval from me.

This is a nice unit. I've read other reviews where people complain that it does not control their application. The temperature of this unit is 100°F (roughly). If you're trying to keep the temperature of your 6 gallon plastic wine bucket while stored in a garage at 35°F on a cement floor, it will never work. You're losing more heat than this can generate. But if you insulate your container and insulate under the heating pad, it will control very nicely in a room that is cooler than your desired temperature. My house is 72°F, I have my 6 gallon bucket of wine on a piece of plywood on top of a piece of Styrofoam sitting on a cold tile floor. The bucket is wrapped in a towel. This device works great at keeping the wine at 80°F !!!!!

A great pad for helping ferment sourdough bread (and fed starters). Decreases cold temp times from 8 to 4 hrs in cold kitchen!

I used it to heat 5 gallons of pale ale wort pitched with Voss kviek yeast. The room was in the 50s so took most of the 1st day to warm up to ideal 95-100F but once it did it stayed there. Easy to use.

What a joke. Nowhere easily accessible was it said this item doesn’t come with the temperature controller. The item arrives with some stickers. Take it out of the package to read in the directions that the temperature controller is sold separately. Sent back immediately. Can’t believe the two items aren’t in the same package. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I use it for making Kombucha in Winter when its too cold to make Kombucha. This takes care of the temperature. Love it.

I make wine in the basement where it's too cool for winemaking. This pad keeps the must at just the right temperature for fermentation.

Warms up brew wash by about 5 degrees Celsius. Works fine. A little pricy though.
