Considerations When Choosing a Home Ventilation System

Homes are now built much more efficiently than they once were, making them far less costly to heat and air condition. That said, having proper ventilation throughout the home is now imperative in order to provide a safe and comfortable living environment. Broan ventilation fans provide the best solutions to ensure that contaminants are constantly removed from the indoors.

Eliminating excess moisture keeps your home dry and comfortable and can help avoid mold and mildew. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) "outgas" from construction materials such as plywood, carpet, fabric, paint, adhesive, insulation, and other common items. Allergens, dust, cooking vapor, and what the kids bring home from school are more reasons why good ventilation is critical.

Sones measure the "sound level" of your fan

A sone is a measurement of sound in terms of comfortable hearing level for an average listener. The lower the sone value, the more comfortable the environment. Sones are not decibels or volume, but rather how sound is "sensed." One sone is half as loud as two sones, and is equivalent to a quiet refrigerator.

Calculate the air movement necessary for proper ventilation

Air movement is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). To determine CFM requirements, first determine the size of your room. Measure and multiply the length, width and ceiling height of your room to determine cubic footage. Then use the multiplication factor of .13 and round up to the next "ten." Here are three examples:

Example 1: Bathroom with 8' ceiling: 7' wide x 9' long x 8' high x .13 = 66. Select a bath fan with at least 70 CFM.

Example 2: Bathroom with 9' ceiling: 10' wide x 9' long x 9' high x .13 = 105. Select a bath fan with at least 110 CFM.

Example 3: For a bathroom with a vaulted ceiling, use the average ceiling height at the wall and the peak: 8' wide x 12' long x ((8' at wall + 12' at peak) / 2 = 10') average height x .13 = 125. Select a fan (or fans) with at least 130 CFM.

easy install, works great. You can definitely still hear the fan a little bit when its turned on, but as advertised, its slightly quieter then the typical bathroom cieling fan. I will say that it's very discrere. It looks like a recessed light - no sign of a fan whatsoever, other than the quiet hum. Very sleek. It also has the option to wire the fan and light to two seperate switches if so desired. I put this fan in my bathroom so I just wired them together - meaning when the light switch is turned on, the fan also switches on. But you could easily install this in a laundry room to increase ventilation and wire the light and fan seperately. Great product. I'll likely be purchasing again for other rooms in my home!

We have an upstairs laundry room that had a habit of getting a bit humid and stuffy after a few loads of laundry. One solution was to leave the door open, but then I would have to hear the washer and dryer operating non-stop; my home office is located next to the laundry room. Quick Google search later, it dawned upon me the obvious solution was to install an exhaust fan, similar to those found in most bathroom these days.I only had the single light switch to work with, and was not in the mood to run/splice electrical cables in the attic to split the power load between two switches. Instead I opted for this exhaust/light box combo. Flip the switch, and the fan and lights turn on. Throw in a motion sensor lightbulb, and the light on remains on while someone is moving about in the room. End of the day, flip the light switch and the whole unit is powered off.Exhaust fan seems to have done the trick, laundry room no longer feels humid and stuffy after a couple of loads. Plus the exhaust fan is much more quieter than the one in our bathrooms (see screenshot of dB app). The ones in our bathroom are standard model noisy things loud enough to hide some interesting sounds from within the bathroom. This unit is much more quieter and barely noticeable when the just out the laundry room with the door closed. My only complaint, if you call it that, is the actual metal casing itself can use some deburring. Looks like they simply stamped out the metal shell, bent it into shape, and left all the little jagged bits of metal and sharp edges for you to discover during installation. Not uncommon for these type of appliances, but definitely worth noting for novice DIYers.Overall, I am satisfied with this solution and have recommended to at least two other people since I've installed it.

These lights with the exhaust fan are great fans. They work great, have a very low noise level and last for years.I have these in my house as well as installing them in several of my customers houses. The price is better than the big box stores as well. Great value

I used this to replace a 15 year old Broan bathroom exhaust fan that stopped working. That fan was very loud and this one is noticably quieter. It makes a low hum which is not objectional at all.The installation was straightforward and smooth. I had to do some patching to the ceiling after the install since the light on this fan is off center and was positioned to the left of the previous fan which I expected. The only small problem I ran into was with the exhaust port on the fan. There is a round plastic piece with a louver door that must be attached to the fan exhaust outlet. It attaches by just pushing it onto the fan and two small plastic protrusions are supposed to seat themselves in two notches on the fan outlet. Only one plastic protrusion would seat itself. I ended up using a small self tapping screw to hold it in place. This wasn't a very big deal but was frustrating. The fan looks good and works well. It is not very powerful but I have a fairly small bathroom. Make sure you check the CFM ratings to size the exhaust fan to the size of your basthroom.

Installed this in place of can light in shower ceiling. Fit existing hole in ceiling perfectly - super simple install. Wiring allows option of controlling the fan and the light independently - or wire for single switch to energize both the light and fan. Used LED lamp (bulb) from old fixture. Looks good. Runs quietly (makes about as much or less noise as the shower itself does). Moves the air, and mirrors no longer fog in our bathroom. Should have installed this years ago. If you like the minimal look of this model... pull the trigger and buy it. I replaced an existing exhaust fan above our toilet the same day - and it was more difficult to replace than it was to install the Broan 744 above the shower! The ONLY thing I can say negative about it is that the exhaust outlet, (ducting centerline would run parallel to ceiling joists) exited on the "wrong" side of the unit in my case. I wish the design were such that it was convertible, but no real big deal there. I would buy again without blinking.

I bought this vent fan/light for my guest bathroom before Thanksgiving as we would be having guests for a week and the bathroom had no exhaust except for a window. Installation was quick and painless, and I am very happy with the results. The extra light in the bathroom is great - we had one vanity light with 5 bulbs that did an admirable job, but the recessed light really is a great addition. The vent fan is also a definite winner - it is so quiet that our guests didn't even realize that it was a fan until we asked if it was doing its job (they said it was!). At 70 CFM, it's not a super powerful fan, but it works perfectly for our guest bathroom (shower/tub combo, toilet, two sinks). My dad has also purchased 2 of these units for his house from other vendors and paid $15-20 more. As usual, you can't beat Amazon's price!

We has another one in our other bathroom and renovated a 2nd bathroom and had a hard time finding the same fan. WE love this fan, it is quiet, and looks like a recessed pot light. We had professional electrician install it while they were re-doing our bathroom. Good value.
