I am so glad I purchased these cabinet jacks; they worked like a charm in helping to install a bathroom exhaust fax. They were well packed, and the carton was secure enough to ensure they stayed in the carton. The end disks are separate from the jack poles, so I used a block of wood and a hammer to force them over the ball ends. While they don't come with instructions, it didn't take long to understand how to use them. A knob on the outer black pole section allows the inner black pole section to be extended. By pressing up on the silver tab on the red section, the silver pole can be extended before the lever on the red section ratches that section into its final position. And when the work is done, reversing the process of extending the sections allows the sections to collapse into each other. This set also comes with a rugged carrying case, made of a woven nylon with a zipper closure and long carrying handles; the pads don't have to be removed for both units to fit in the carrying case.Using these third hands is better than jury rigging something when you need to hold something up when attaching it to a wall or ceiling. They sure made my work much easier.

I used them to help hold up over the range microwave by myself while installing in place. Why I only rate 3 stars is because they do not reliably stand vertically on their own. You have to hold the jacks until they have been raised to make contact with whatever you are trying to hold up. This requires you to use one hand to freehandedly hold the item up in the air while using the other to hold the jacks and jack them up underneath it. You'd need to be able to hold the item by yourself with one hand while holding the jacks with the other. Precarious or impossible to do if the item is difficult to hold steady with one hand. You cannot leave the jacks to stand up on their own, lower the item on top of the jacks with both hands, then jack it up into place. I would think you will run into similar problem when installing cabinets as well.

I made a slight modification to my jacks by drilling a hole approximately where I wanted the stop to be and inserted a 1/4" steel pin and now they no longer slip when in use.
