I purchased this Cable Matters adapter as well as Vantec USB 3.1Gen 2 Type-c SATA SSD/HDD Storage Adapter. The Vantec works great - with fantastic throughput that's as good as I'd expect if the drive were connected internally to a 6gbs SATA controller. The Cable Matters adapter basically locks up portions of Windows as soon as it's connected with any SSD I've tried. Many Windows-related items are in lockup - including Windows Explorer, Disk Management in Admin Tools and more. On one SSD I tried, finally after more than a minute, the system starts responding, the drive appears as an unrecognized drive in Disk Management that needs to be activated/initialized for use and a prompt appears asking if want to make it a MBR or GPT disk. This is a SSD that is already a bootable drive with multiple partitions. Proceeding further and making a selection is likely to effectively destroy the ability to access the contents of the SSD. With the Vantec controller, the drive is instantly recognized and works fine. I'm going to request return/refund of the Cable Matters adapter.

I completely killed my older macbook pro by accident. With this cable, I was able to simply pull the hard drive from it (Hitachi 160G hard drive), and plug it into the thunderbolt 3 connector of a newer macbook pro. And the drive came right up on the desktop as a fully functional disk with all the files there! Just like any other thumb drive or accessory storage device you might plug in. Worked perfect. Who knew it worked that simply! And the cable is nice and compact, and very good quality it seems. Very good value for what I was able to do with it. I can even keep the hard disk itself around as backup storage now if I want. If you break your older macbook pro like I did, this works great on a thunderbolt 3 macbook to retrieve files. (Note, you also need a screwdriver set that works on the tiny laptop screws to get the hard drive out of the other macbook.)

Updated 8.15.22: After customer service contacted me, we determined my adapter might be defective. After some quick troubleshooting, Cable Matters sent me a replacement product, which is working like it should and is as fast as any adapter I've used. Great customer service and changing my rating from a 1 to a 5.I use adapters like these to connect SSD drives to my laptop, and this one is not reliable enough for me to use regularly. It will usually mount the drive, but has dropped a drive on me several times - enough where I will not use it as a primary connection. So in the end, this was an inexpensive backup adapter that will not get used much. I'd recommend the slightly more expensive Angelbird adapter, which has never failed to get and hold a connection.

It’s a USB-C to SATA 10Gbps adapter, and does what it needs, but don’t be fooled as there’s more to it.The adapter is a USB 3.2 Gen 1x2 adapter, which is rated for 10Gbps. It achieves it by using two Gen 1 (5Gbps) lanes, instead of the standard Gen 2 10Gbps (Gen 2x1, a single 10Gbps lane). The issue that arises is when you want to use this adapter with, say an Apple Silicon Mac, such as a M1 of M2 (and it’s variants). Apple doesn’t support Gen 1x2 10Gbps, the dual lane version. Apple only supports Gen 2x1 10Gbps, the single lane version. If you use this with a Mac, it’ll fall back to 5Gbps.Also, good luck on finding any additional information on whether your computer supports the Gen 1x2 standard (again, dual 5Gbps lanes), as this is a newer 2019 standard, and nobody really states if the USB3 10Gbps standard they support is just Gen 2(x1), or if it also includes Gen 1x2.Buy with caution as you might just end up being limited to 5Gbps speeds (not too much of an issue as SATA3 is 6Gbps tops).

i’ll let the numbers speak for themselves. i actually had a little higher number than this somewhere but i’m too lazy to find it. had another one of these cable from a different brand but they can’t match this speed. the other one tends to disconnect without even touching or moving anything. just literally sat still on my desk and it disconnects multiple times, and it’s slower than this one by at least 10%. can’t believe that other one had a higher rating (4.6) compared to this one (4.5). anyways, thank you for a genuine product. if you are looking for a thunderbolt or usb-c to sata, get this one!!

Originally purchased to clone a drive when I was out of town. It takes very little space in my laptop bag compared to my older adapters or enclosures. I see little to no difference in speed tests using this cable compared to when the drive was internal. I have to hide it or else it gets borrowed "for just a minute while I check this drive."As a general rule of thumb: 2.5 inch drives will work, 3.5 or 5.25 inch hard drives require more power and usually need an adapter with an external power supply, 5.25 full height optical drives haven't worked with this adapter and you'll need to check the model of powered adapter to see if optical drives are supported. (My older required a firmware update and now handles an drive.)

The specifications what are advertised are certainly not the ones in the product I received. It is advertised as a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 GBPs) but what I received was a USB 3.0 which has a speed of 5GBPs.
