Product Description

RF 100-400 BANNER 970x600

Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens

A versatile telephoto-zoom with a portable form factor, the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM is a nimble lens perfect for wildlife, sports, and travel shooting. With extended range, this zoom packs super-telephoto reach into a relatively sleek, lightweight design along with support for Coordinated IS to help control up to 6 stops of camera shake and Nano USM AF to promote faster focusing performance.

Optically, the lens uses specialized elements to control a variety of aberrations and produce images with high sharpness and clarity throughout the zoom range. Close-focusing performance is also possible, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x at the 400mm position, for close-up shooting of subjects as small as a credit card.

rf 100-400mm image stabilization

Optical Image Stabilizer with up to 5.5 Stops* of shake correction

Because RF lenses are designed specifically for the RF Mount found on EOS R series cameras, the lens and camera combine to share Image Stabilization data, helping to dramatically reduce the effect of camera shake that can occur when working handheld. This applies when capturing both stills and video with up to 5.5 stops of stabilization* for accurate and clear content.

minimum focus rf 100-400mm

Minimum focusing distance of 2.89 feet at 200mm and maximum magnification of 0.41x at 400mm

With a minimum focusing distance of 2.89 feet at 200mm, the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens is capable of capturing sharp and detailed images from various distances. Especially noteworthy is the lens’s close-up capabilities at the 400mm zoom setting — at its minimum focus distance, at 400mm, you can fill the frame with a subject about the size of a credit card providing outstanding versatility and strikingly sharp images.

rf 100-400mm bokeh

9-blade circular aperture for beautiful bokeh

Getting a smooth and natural looking out-of-focus background blur isn’t a problem for this lens as it has a 9-blade circular aperture which separates your subject from the background, while also providing a beautiful backdrop that's visually appealing in itself.

CANON RF FRONT AND REAR CAPS

Front and Rear Lens Caps provided by Canon

  • Front Lens Cap: Protecting the front of your lens when not in use, the Canon E-67 II Lens Cap is a 67mm-diameter cap featuring a center pinch design along with the Canon logo on the front. When in place, this cap guards against dust, moisture, and scratches.

  • Rear Lens Cap: Dedicated to Canon RF-mount lenses, the Lens Dust Cap RF protects the lens's rear element from dust and scratches when it is not attached to a camera.

uv filter

UV Glass Filter

General use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light, reduces the bluish cast of daylight and protects your lens in certain accidental scenarios. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.

LENS CAP KEEPER

Lens Cap Keeper

This prevents the loss of lens caps. An adhesive-backed disc secures the lens cap to the elastic leash which wraps around the lens barrel. With the lens cap removed from the lens while shooting, it hangs out of the way but secure and within reach for easy retrieval.

Took this on vacation recently. While it's a little bulky (expected), it's lightweight, easy to use, works great. The image quality, image stabilization, and both auto-focus and manual focus are excellent. Everything works smoothly. Great option for any of Canon's APS-C mirrorless R series cameras. I believe it works on the full-frame versions too, but with a cropped image size since it's designed for the APS-C models.

This lens is really great at this price point. It is light weight and sharp. Paired with a crop sensor camera body, it gives an effective focal length of 640mm. Its small size and light weight make it a great travel lens. In my experience, it focuses much faster than similar third-party lenses. Don't think twice about getting this lens, just do it!

I bought this lens to go with my new Canon R7. Or maybe I bought the R7 to go with this lens? I really wanted a lighter weight lens and camera for carrying with me when hiking or birding. My 6d / 100-400mm F4-5.6 IS L (Mark 1) was too heavy to carry around my neck for hours. I got a Sony RX10 mark IV bridge camera which was a great size and weight, but the picture quality was not as good as I wanted. This lens and body combo is hopefully the answer to my problems. The lens itself is pretty impressive in terms of its length and weight. Sure, I wish it were shorter, but for 400mm, I can't really complain. I also wish it had a wider aperture, but for the lower price and weight, that is obviously the compromise you have to make. The sensor noise performance of the R7 eliminates some of the downside of the slow lens, but it can't help create the nice background blur that a fast lens will have. The image stabilization combo of the lens and body works exceptionally well. I have been getting sharp shots at 400mm with 1/250s handheld with my shaky hands. Images look crisp to me and autofocus is very fast and quiet. One thing I have not gotten used to is the zoom ring works backwards from every other lens I have. Maybe someday I will get used to it, but for now, every time I try to use it I start with rotating it the wrong way. On the plus side, there is no zoom creep when I am walking around with this lens around my neck. There is a lock where you can fix it at 100mm, but I have never had to use it.I am a little disappointed there is no weather sealing on this lens. I'd have paid a little more to have some basic weather sealing on it as I don't want to have to worry about using it in mist or rain.I'm not taking any stars off for those items that disappoint me about this lens as they are either compromises for size and weight, or were known limitations when I bought the lens and not a surprise. Overall, 5 stars as I am very happy carrying this lens around for hours taking bird photos.

The RF100-400 Zoom is a great performing telephoto zoom. It does everything well for a modest price. It focuses very fast. It handles very well. Its plastic construction keeps the weight down. The lens produces super sharp images that rival Canon ‘L’ zoom lenses. Drop a plastic lens on concrete and it is trashed. Drop a Canon ‘L’ lens on concrete it will be trashed too.

Love this lens. I continue to be amazed by the quality of Canon glass, even at this price level. Images are indistinguishable from my L lenses. Is it long enough? Not sure yet, but quality-wise it's a great fit.

Use this on an r5, pretty slow to autofocus, poor light visibility. However I would recommend it based on the price, I think it’s a good value. It is really sharp when you have good weather and the picture quality is comparable to higher cost versions. The build quality isn’t the best, it’s plastic and not weather protected but because of it it is really light so you’ll be more likely to bring it with you. And the price too may make you less worried about when to use it..it’s a good functional part of your kit and it can be fun to zoom around that much and see wildlife closer

Easy to use, minor shake when fully extended, but gets great photos, especially of sports events.

Who/ What:I paired this with my R10 and am now barely out of the newb phase (bought 10 months ago). I bought this lens primarily to shoot my kids in track, soccer and X country meets and this lens has been great for those sports.Where:I'm shooting primarily outdoors in fields or on tracks (Hayward field once). Interestingly, I found that cloudy conditions were OK to shoot with this lens.... When I've tried to shoot practices under flourescent lights I saw some struggles with the auto focusing. When:The sports I'm shooting are generally in the day time, so the auto-zoom and tracking are spot on. I was able to consistently record and take pictures of my son throughout the track without any problems! I would have to switch to manual focus if there were many kids passing by in front of the lens, but the lens still handled that easily. Handles 15 image burst-shots with no problems (like taking pictures of the boys coming off the starting blocks), amazing pictures! When trying to shoot Soccer at dusk under lights, I had issues with the auto focusing and the light in the pictures, so I had to switch to the 70-200 in those cases. Why:So for being my first telephoto lens ever, I was very fortunate to have this lens without having to give up a kidney. I have since bought a 24-105 variable aperture and a 70-200 f4. The focusing on the 100-400 is faster than my 24-105 and yes the 70-200 is a GREAT lens at f4, but when I need to get the extra details on the other side of the track, I still need the reach of the 100-400 to get those shots.I highly recommend this lens! The only caveat is to expect diminishing performance as the sun starts to go down.

I use a canon R5 and all my lenses are L lenses only , but I bought this for my jungle safari coming soon . Tested this out today and I and pleased to say that it’s quite good. It sometimes struggles to find focus but most of the time it’s accurate. It’s light as compare to my rf 28-70 f2 . And I like the image quality
