First of all, I just installed this a few days ago so I cannot comment on the longevity of the product. Installation was a nightmare considering how easy this should have gone. This product replaced an original fuel pump on a 1978 Lincoln Continental Town Car with a 460. The old one came right off. This new one took FOREVER to install because the fuel pump on this car is located under the bracket combo that holds the power steering and brake pump (these are equipped with Hydro-boost brakes) and the air conditioning compressor. There is no room to get a wrench in the space to turn the bolts (unless you have a really short set of wrenches). You need to use your hands or a socket. You can access the bolt towards the front of the car reasonably well but you can barely get a hand up to the bolt to manipulate the one towards the firewall side. Due to the casting design of the vacuum chamber, you can't initially get a socket on the end of the bolt so you end up fiddling with the stupid bolt forever in order to get it in far enough to get something on the head of the bolt to tighten it up. It was extremely frustrating. That being said, I still gave it 4-stars because it works like it should and if you don't have a ton of other accessories in the way, you could get an open-end wrench on it and there wouldn't be an issue with the installation at all. I just wish it was designed like the original. It would have been a lot easier to install and it lasted 42 years.

I installed a half dozen of these pumps in the past 4 years on 5 different trucks. This one I put on and it’s making noises like metal on metal sounds. Then it will quiet down and start again. Too much time and work to take off to send back. I’ll see if the noise goes away.

I agree with another reviewer on the limited access to the bolts. For some reason this newer casting is larger and dies not allow good access to the mounting bolts with a socket and extension. I used 1/4" drive socket and extension and had to go at a bit of an angle in order to get the bolts started and tightened down. I don't think a universal joint would have enough room. The older replacement carter fuel pump that was on the car allowed direct access but this newer one I received could make replacement on the side of the road quite a bit more difficult.I'm not sure if any of other fuel pumps available now have the same issue but you might try ordering a few different ones and see which works best.

As another reviewer stated, this design is not spec to the original that it replaces. It should (hypothetically) work but unlike the original they made the casing on this interfere with the bolt hole location so that installation is an absolute nightmare and you are going to have a hard time getting a wrench or a socket on the bolts to tighten it. After wasting an hour of my time trying to get my fingers to hand tighten it and fighting with wrenches I threw in the towel and threw this pump straight into the garbage. In fairness it otherwise looks well made and I think I could smell gasoline inside indicating that it was tested. It's just mind-boggling why they would put the body/casing "up" so that you're obviously not going to be able to get a socket on the bolts, and wrenches are going to be difficult to say the least.

The actual item may be a function equivalent, but is shaped different than shown in the picture, which was important for mounting on my car. My old one was as pictured and I could remove from the side of the car. The one delivered blocked access to the mounting bolts and I had to remove A/C compressor and P/S pump to install.

Slightly different from original, housing is wider and impossible to reach bolts without detaching steering pump and ac compressor ( left hosoes attached ) . but when workspace open no problem installing it, all together took me 1,5 hours to take apart and re assemble, works like a dream car runs great.1978 Mercury Grand Marquis 2dr HT, 460 CUI
