Having used an analog thermometer for years, I decided it was time to upgrade to something quicker and more accurate. It's not that there was anything wrong with my old thermometer, but when working over a hot grill, it gets old having to wait 30 seconds for the thermometer to register a value. So far, this thermometer has been working out great. It reads very quickly (just a few seconds) and from some simple tests (boiling water, ice water) it's well calibrated out of the box in my case. No complaints in that department. It also has a very fine tip on it which makes insertion quick and effortless and pokes much smaller holes in steaks and roasts allowing less of the juices to escape. In fact, it's fine and sharp enough that you have to be somewhat careful not to send the tip right through the meat. The included sheath is plastic and has a clip on it. I never clip it to anything so I cannot comment on how well it will hold up, but the sheath itself is very snug fitting and provided good protection for the probe. As a nice touch, some basic meat cooking temperatures are listed on the sheath though the print is somewhat fine. Nice for a quick reference. The display of the unit has nice large numbers and is easy to read. Buttons are clearly labeled and it will easily switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius. In addition, the display is oval which means if you set this down on a counter it won't roll away.Overall, I'm impressed. A good product at a fair price that performs well and has a few nice features that put it a step ahead of others I've seen.Update: After a couple years and hundreds of uses, it's still going strong on the original battery. Still use it frequently and I still have had no issues to speak of. For the price, it's been a great purchase.

For some reason, I find myself often needing to measure the temperature of various liquids and solids? How fast does my diet Pepsi cool in the freezer? How hot is the water coming out of my faucet? Interesting data has been gleaned from using this product. For example, in a top loading washer, the thermal mass of the metal and clothes in a top loading washer drops about 20 degrees from the 140 that is dispensed -- leading to a 40 degree shortfall from a commercial washer. While useful for various fun tasks around the house, chefs will appreciate the vary rapid response of the pointed tip. The CDN is clearly superior to an inexpensive thermometer I previous purchased from Walmart. In a laboratory setting, accuracy is important. While my needs are not that stringent, I did want to test within the limited resources at my disposal, including my IR thermometer. So, I test it along with the IR thermometer with three different liquids: 1)water/green tea cooling from boiling temp 2) Polmos rectified spirits - 96% alcohol from freezer 3) Olive oil heated in an oven. In order to somewhat scientific, I avoided ambient air movement and took measurements in a corner of room separate from any radiating heat. This conditions would NOT pass NIST standards but I tried anyway. Results below.Conditions:1) CDN was used to aggressively mix fluid so no surface temperature differences2) Ambient light and air movement avoided3) Insulating potholder used to rest glasses4) Ambient temperature approximately 70-72 degreesAll results in FahrenheitConcentrated green tea in 1000ml pyrexDate: 12/11/2012Time .... This is the new version of the , which is very well reviewed on Amazon. That model (DTQ450) has been discontinued and replaced with this model (DTQ450X). This is the first quick-read thermometer I've owned for cooking. If you don't have a quick-read, I highly recommend it. Traditional thermometers can take up to a minute to read temperature. This CDN model provides a temperature reading within about 2-3 seconds. That is extremely convenient compared to a traditional thermometer. The form factor is fairly nice. The thermometer is small (6.5" long), and the readout is not too big, maybe a little larger than a quarter. The buttons are easy to press and the readout is easy to view. The stem is made of stainless steel and it feels fairly solidly built. It can be switched between metric and English units as well. When actually using the thermometer, don't stick the entire stem into your food like I did for a week. It will give you an inaccurate reading. Just place the very tip of the stem in your food about 1/2" in and it will read. The only possible problem I can see with this is that you might not be able to check the temperature in the very middle of your food if you have a thick piece of meat.Length: 6.5"Temperature range: -40 to 350FInstant Read: Cleaning: Just wipe clean with damp cloth. Comes with a case to protect the stem.Special Features: Shatterproof; auto-off option (cuts off automatically after 10 minutes)UPDATE: 24 Dec 2011 - Two years and hundreds of dishes later and this thermometer still works, however the case it comes in has expanded or loosened up and no longer fits, which is disappointing. It is still one of my most used kitchen items.

Works as expected. It's our second one as the first one had it's battery died after many uses. In the end, it was better off purchasing a second one than replacing the battery.

Product was delivered to us promptly. Works great in fact we use to cook turkeys in the oven by guessing and cutting into the turkey. It would often overcook because we didn't want any issues with it and get sick. Using this thermometer we now get moist turkeys that are cooked all the way through. No more dried out meats.
