Cute soft faux grass with a rubber back. It's not very thick, but should do the trick. I use dish tubs as inserts for my layer boxes and they fit nicely inside with a little extra to create a tight fit. I put these in 5 of 6 boxes and their standard shavings in the 6th. I'll update my review and star rating once they display their preference. For my part, though, it looks like it'll be much easier to keep the boxes clean. I got more than I needed so I could have clean ones ready if I need to take some out to wash.Update 1: When given a choice, the girls ALL laid in the same box that had shavings instead of these. I, however, am personally having a strong preference for these as they're so much easier to clean and sift out any "yuck" if needed. I went ahead and put one of these in the last box and they now use them just fine.Update 2: Girls prefer to lay in the coop floor rather than use these pads. Also - they're not very durable. The girls are, I guess, knocking them out of the layer boxes on to the coop floor and either digging on them or pecking them, but I now have two mats that are mostly bald. I'm going to try to use them until they're all worn out because they really are much cleaner, but they're not turning out to be practical.

I’ve struggled with hay, straw, wood shavings, and other bedding options, but these mats are a game-changer. My girls tend to poop in the nesting boxes, which makes cleaning difficult when using natural materials. These mats not only protect the eggs but also fit perfectly in the boxes, look great, and are incredibly easy to clean.I simply shake them off, and the dried poop falls right off. If an egg breaks—like some did during our last polar vortex—I just rinse them with water, and they’re good as new. Plus, they come in a pack of 10, which is a great value. I have six nesting boxes, so I keep the extra four underneath some of the mats and rotate them when needed.Fantastic product—I only wish I had switched to these years ago!
