I have bought and used dozens of Coast headlamps over the last 10-plus years. Why? Because they hold up better than any other brand I have tried. And I've tried a lot. Because I need help seeing in low light, I literally use my headlamps every single day, a lot. Even as quality for the price as my past Coasts, they eventually have something happen. Pick a past or current model; I have used them all. Weak points, such as plastic components that delaminate or break, switch failures, the wire connection from the battery pack to the lamp fails, the headband stretches beyond wearability, or the rubber cover over the battery pack wears out and won't stay in place. Coast does sell replacement parts on their website and things like replacement headbands are well worth it. So the folks at Coast obviously have realized their shortcomings and with this model, I absolutely everything about it. Huge improvements!1. Metal housing. Very durable.2. No detached battery pack. The single rechargeable battery is in the metal housing. So, no wires to catch stray objects or develop a failed connection.3. Weight. Not so heavy that it feels like you're wearing a small barbell on your forehead.4. Brightness. This is as bright, if not brighter than the brightest Coast I have owned, and that one was actually much bigger and heavier.5. Functionality. I like the 3 levels of brightness, plus the bonus, where if you hold the switch down, it gets super bright. Full focus too, from wide to narrow.6. The headband. Very strong and easily replaceable.7. Charging and battery. I recharge the battery every other day. Unlike my other headlamps, where I had to pop AA or AAA batteries out to recharge, this plugs directly into the included USB-C cable. The USB-C connection on the frame is covered when you're not charging, which is nice. The single battery lasts quite a long time.I will be purchasing more of this model, to keep one in my truck, and more as backups. Highly recommend this XPH34R.

I have been through plenty of different brands and price points with headlamps. This one, by far, is in the #1 spot for me. Super bright if you need it to be, easy to use, and the magnet is very useful in more ways than I thought it would be (and very strong).I was concerned with all the weight being on the front and nothing to balance in the back, but once you get it fitted to your head right, it is very comfortable and light. Sometimes I forget its there. And the best part, in my opinion, is how long the battery lasts. I use a headlamp on a daily basis and would have to change batteries every 10 days or so. This goes strong for me on a single charge for a couple weeks or more!

This is mainly a review of the Coast XPH34R. However I do also somewhat review the Coast HL8 by comparison. Both of these products are quality items which I own.The HL8 is an earlier model with a lower light output. The advantage of this light is it will take AA batteries, and can be equipped with an optional rechargeable battery at extra cost. It is also in my opinion an more comfortable light to wear if you are not using a hard hat. The portion of the light that rests against your forehead seems larger, and the light is lighter. The brightness on the HL8 is easily adjustable with a 3 position rotary switch. This light is mainly a plastic build, but well made, and that may be why it is lighter. The XPH34R is primarily a metal product. It seems to be precision machined. It is designed to be used with Coasts lithium battery made for this product, and works well, is very bright. It is not as comfortable as the HL8 because it is heavier, and it appears that the area of the light that rests against the forehead is smaller, so more weight on a smaller area. This potential problem (not everyone will find it a problem) could be mitigated by using it with a hard hat. Coast provides a battery carrier which can be inserted in lieu of the rechargeable battery that takes AAA cells. I do not think AAA cells would last very long in this product, so you might want to get a spare rechargeable. You adjust the brightness of this product by a series of button presses. The light starts in medium mode. To set on high, press the button twice. To set on low, 3 times. The turbo mode can be activated by holding the button down for two seconds. I actually prefer the mechanism of the HL8 for setting brightness, but unless you are changing this often, the button presses should work fine.I like both these products and rate them 5 stars. However, be aware that while the XPH34R is pitched as a 2075 lumen light, this is ONLY in turbo mode, which shuts off after a very short time, and goes to a lower brightness… I assume to protect the light from heat damage. I can not find this detail in the light specs or description, but it is in the Q & A on the Coast website re this product… so I would rate the description as a little misleading. It has been my experience that Coast honors its lifetime warranty. I am a bit of a Coast-a-holic, (I have lots of their products), and have replaced two of them under warranty, which has been hastle free, and one reason I keep coming back for more.I wish they made cars.

Brightest headlamp I've tried, great for hiking at night. And I can lower the light level for reading and doing close work. The headband is comfortable and easy to adjust, and the light can be pivoted up and down so it shines directly on the work. The battery lasts a long time on the default medium brightness setting, and the USB-C connector isn't fussy when hooking it up to recharge. I held back one star for two reasons. First, the adjustment for pivoting the light is too stiff, and it requires two hands to work. Second, when I'm working on a car or motorcycle, the magnet on the end of the light will sometimes stick to the frame or body metal of the vehicle, and the magnet is strong enough to cause the headband to rotate out of alignment or come off my head. It would be nice if Coast provided a soft plastic cap that was attached to the body of the light to cover up the magnet when it was not in use. The magnet itself is sometimes useful, but it would be much more so if it was mounted on a ball joint so the light could be aimed in more than just one direction. Not an unreasonable request for a light costing this much.

Very disappointed. The torch has broken just outside the month return window. It won't charge and the Coast branded rechargeable battery that comes with it is roughly half the cost of the overall unit. The battery doesn't appear to be sold within the UK and cant be shipped to the UK. This is far too expensive a torch to fail so soon. I have had much cheaper head torches that lasted years.

Holds a long charge and has great lighting options with turbo setting max lumen auto shutting off after 30 seconds or so.Comes with a lifetime warranty.
