Cars are smaller these days, so everything's crammed into the engine compartment. It's a Ford Bronco V-6 block with Mazda OHC heads that make it high-performance BUT, fixing the stupid water pump is a hassle. This tool's needed to get at the (divorced) two-piece water pump assembly by removing a drive pulley attached to one of the camshafts--to get access to the WP. We tried to McGuyver it first, but no cigar. Pulley came off and was put back on easily with this tool. It worked like a champ and was more cost-effective. I laugh at the guys who make YouTube 'mechanic' videos. Like many repairs on the Mazda 6, it's not a yob for novices. I'm not getting into procedure specifics here. I'm an old-school mechanic and drag racer and totally disliked that I had to buy yet another tool for one specific repair job. Some other Fords require this tool...

I purchased this "tool" as it was significantly cheaper and available sooner than the OTC set (7483A) recommended elsewhere. It has the necessary parts for grabbing the back side of the water pump pulley, but lacks the "H"-shaped piece to bolt on the front and actually pull the pulley off of the camshaft. OTC has a part number for this separately, 7245, but it's also fairly expensive. You can get the necessary part through the major parts stores' tool rental programs (free)--what you need is a steering wheel puller rental, e.g. 67011 from O'Reilly. Also, for some inexplicable reason, the nut used for pulling the pulley back onto the camshaft is round on the outside. Spare yourself the hassle, and buy a 1/2-20 nut from the local hardware store and use that instead. Thread the shaft included with this kit into the camshaft with the spacer and that nut on the larger threads. Once threaded into the camshaft, tighten the nut and the pulley will slide right back on.

The special nut for pressing the pully back on the camshaft was missing. There is a threaded sleeve (without flats for a wrench) included without any way to tighten that sleeve except with a pipe wrench or other type tool. Because of that I have managed to make this tool usable after dismissing the threaded sleve and adding a 1/2" 20 thread per inch standard American nut in place of the threaded sleeve. I have at this time not put the tool to the test but believe it will be just fine. Oh yes, for those curious, the threads in the end of the camshaft according to my measurements are M8 X 1.25.

The product worked as well as the higher priced similar items. Fast an easy removal of the cam pulley without damaging it, are reinstalling was quick and easy. Highly recommend for the home mechanic or professional.

Worked removing and installing the water pump camshaft pulley on a 2010 3.0 ford escape. I had to replace the camshaft retainer seal holder.

Works perfectly with any standard steering wheel/balancer puller (which is required for this version of the tool). A lot of people stress out about the round nut but I was able to grab it, unmodified, and turn it easily with a small pipe wrench. The pulley came off (a very rusty shaft) perfectly in about 30 seconds.
