This is a great hitch for light duty work on the 2012 Volt. I do most of my own work, and this hitch is fairly easy install, but not a simple bolt on. It requires drilling a hole in the floor pan and cutting one of the aerodynamic covers under the car, but doesn't require anything more than tin snips and a drill along with a few wrenches.Overall, the price is excellent and the rack looks good. It works great with my bike rack, which is why I installed it. The Volt doesn't have any tow rating, and this hitch install is only rated for 100 lbs tongue and 1000 lb tow limit, so don't use it for anything super heavy. It would work great for a light utility trailer or similar.

I just finished installing this hitch on my 2014 Volt. The instructions are pretty good, except for the trimming of the plastic pan that has to be removed to install the hitch. U-Haul wanted $275 for the hitch and installation. Saving $175 is worth a little frustration. You'll need a 17/32" drill bit for the one hole required to be drilled. If you have a step-bit with that size, it will work just fine. The instructions are vague about the placement of the hole needed to be drilled. To ensure I drilled the proper location, I installed the hitch with the 3 other bolts and marked the hole with a marker. You'll also need some silicone to weatherproof the 2 penetrations on the drivers side. The install took me about 2 hours but that was only due to the several attempts required to properly trim the plastic pan mentioned earlier.

At more in depth look...it looks complicated to install...but with people's review and explanation...it was quite simple to install. Having some good tools and basic, decent instructions and being handy does help.Pros:1. If handy...easy to install ..around two hours was about right.2. Good price3. Well built...felt very solidCons:1...need to be handy with tools.Fulcrum.

Did NOT fit a 2011 Volt. The instructions call out connecting to pre-existing frame weld nuts which were not present on my 2011 Volt. Returning... Wish I had found this post first ! [...]

Fits 2012 Chevy Volt. I did it at home with a manual torque wrench. The drill hole positions is a tiny bit off but you can swing the hitch rearward by half inch to match a plastic cap & drill only one new hole. It's been tremendously helpful in renting the 4x7 Utility Trailer from UHaul & get things done. What I like most is that you book their trailer online, checkin online (provide snapshot front &back of photo ID), come to their location & let them hook it up. Off you go & you can return the trailer 24hrs at their drop off lot. No more worries about transportation to get/return a rental van or truck. Not to mention magnitude in gas savings for longer trips too. Just awesome.

Overall not bad for the money. It was the cheapest option I could find and I'm happy with it. Curt makes good products. My only gripe is the low tongue weight, which I know I will probably exceed with my bike rack and bikes, and the way the hitch mounts to the trunk floor on the driver's side. Hence 4 stars.Installation time took me about 3 hours, taking my time. Most of which was spent squaring up the hitch and centering it with my tape measure, Calipers and my machinist eye before hand tightening the hitch to drill the hole. (If you're OCD like me you'll understand) I used a 1/2 drill bit since that was the biggest bit I had on hand and it worked just fine. The 1/2" bolts measured at. 495". So I had at least. 005" clearence.I used tin snips to trim the molding on the underside. That took quite a bit of trial and error. And for the weld nuts on the passenger side, mine were perfectly clean. I didn't have to wire brush the threads or anything. (My car spent most of its life in California)

Happy to have a hitch now. But it would have been a much easier install if they would have included extra spacer blocks for cars missing weld nuts. anyway I went to a local Trailer Hitch shop and they gave me some, And I had to acquire 2 more carriage bolts/nuts. Using a piece of wire you have to fish the bolt with the spacer at the same time through the frame where the missing weld nuts should be.
