It was inevitable. Accidents happen. Even as a grown adult, I dropped my mouthpiece during a rehearsal! It was embarrassing! The shank was dented in! What to do? Go to my local instrument repair shop and hang my head in shame? Then come to the rescue, the DEG A04-TT995 Mouthpiece Trueing tool! No instructions were included. So I just YouTubed mouthpiece trueing and there were some videos demonstrations made by an instrument repair tech. Inserted the trueing tool until it was snug. Used a non heavy wooden mallet/hammer and gently tapped the rod until the outer rim of the shank was true! You don't want to really tap the tool so far in that it gets stuck! To remove the tool, I gently tapped the side of the shank to break the tool loose. The tool is well made and it made my shank opening true! Look at the before and after photos! Money worth spent and it spared me the embarrassment of taking it to the instrument repair shop.

This mouthpiece truing tool is used to restore mouthpieces which have been damaged usually by dropping them. When dropped, the shank of the mouthpiece can become flat-spotted which restricts air flow and can lead to the mouthpiece becoming stuck in the lead pipe. The truing tool will easily restore the mouthpiece shank to its normal shape. Note: the tool that I received is a bit smaller than the one I used for many years but still works fine for all brass mouthpieces.

I’m always dropping things and my trumpet mouthpiece is one of those things. I bought this to fix my dented shaft and it worked great. It now has a permanent place in my case for when I go to rehearsal or concert.

I was going to order this for a few dollars more from a music merchant so i could take the deformations out of the shank of my 30+ year old Claude Gordon Personal mouthpiece. This had the deformations in it from day 1 and it always bothered me.Within 5 minutes of gentle tapping, I used a Watchmaker's hammer I got at Harbor Freight and used the clear plastic tip on it to round out the bottom of the shank. If you don't have a hammer like this, you could probably use a wood dowel between 1/2" and 1" in diameter, cut to about 10-14 inches long, or even a heavy drumstick You don't want to use a metal hammer, you want a plastic or delrin head on there and preferably not big. You could even use the handle of a broom or the handle side of a wood handled hammer or the handle of a medium to large sized screwdriver. It doesn't take a lot of muscle or effort to make the repair, just patience. Let the tools together do the work. While this is a bit much to repair 1 mouthpiece, it's a lot less than taking it to a repair shop. Considering I will be working with a lot of student players and whatever they get to work with, this is a cheap investment. If I can do this repair for any brass instrument mouthpiece in a few minutes. with this tool, it's time well spent and money saved. The tool itself is just solid metal with no moving parts. It feels solid and designed to handle many, many repairs.

I used a metal hammer, but I strongly recommend using rawhide. I put the tool in the shank and hit the mouthpiece around it. DO NOT TWIST. I accidentally stripped off a layer of my mouthpiece. It works really well and I'm very satisfied.

I've used this on all my junk mouthpieces as well as several of my students' mouthpieces. Great product that will last a lifetime. No more borrowing or paying to get this simple job done! Every brass player should have one of these in their case or gig bag for when the inevitable happens. Looking at you, trumpets. Stop dropping stuff back there!
