The sound quality of the Denon CD player is the best I have heard. The CD player picks up sounds from the CD that I didn't even know were there. I think you will be hard pressed to find a better CD player

Unbelievable that a $3000+ player lacks any type of digital input. That means you can’t use its outstanding DAC for streaming TIDAL, Qobuz or other services, which many will want to do for the superior sound quality. It also means you’ll be stuck with a $3000 paperweight if the laser assembly fails, which happened to me on a previous Denon.

I bought the Denon CD player on a whim to replace the Pro-ject CD transport, which stopped working after a year. Before that, I owned the Marantz SA10, but I never really liked it as it sounded too smooth and muffled. I still have the Hegel Mohican CD player, which is highly regarded by Stereophile, and the Meridian 508 24-bit, a classic! I also used to have the Audiolab CDT6000 as a transport, connected to either the Chord Dave/Mscaler or Holo May. I found that I preferred the Denon over all the others, especially when connected as a CD transport to the Holo May DAC. On its own, the Denon is neutral and polite without being overly exciting, aggressive, detailed, bright, or smooth. Its outstanding quality is that it plays your music without any weird or special effects. It doesn’t have the insane details of the Dave or the holography and smoothness of the May. Sometimes with high-end DACs, I find myself more excited by the technical prowess than the music itself. The only downside to this player is the lack of balanced outputs and access to the DAC through digital inputs. However, if these features were included, the price might have been raised to 5 or 6k. Its current price is a gem for people like me with an extensive collection of CDs and SACDs. The Denon has satisfied my needs to the extent that I have no interest in exploring CD players from other brands. If you look carefully online, you’ll find it at an excellent price. Also, remember that it needs time of constant play to show its true colors.

The red Book DAC on this SACD/CD player is the best DAC I have heard, even compared to separates. This sounds better than the DACs in my RME ADI-2 DAC FS, Burson Conductor 3 Reference and Gustard X26pro. Really impressed with this unit. It also plays SACDs flawlessly. Denon surprised me, as this component is quite heavy and well damped, the controls inspire confidence that they are solidly engineered, and operating this unit is more satisfying, both in tactile feedback and in sonic purity, than a couple of high end Sony ES SACD/CD players I have. The only knock for me is that it doesn't have balanced XLR outputs.

Very disappointed. Very bright sounding player, especially on Redbook CDs. The digital processing is very obvious. It lacks bass compared to my 24 year old Sony SCD-1. It lacks warmth in the sound. What others describe as detail, they never heard before is actually hyper detail which sounds fake, like looking at someone’s face with a 10x magnification. In the end, it makes regular CDs sound worse. SACDs are better, but still sound too bright and analytical. This is a clinical sound which is the opposite of musical, warm, or a tube like sound. It’s going back to Denon next week. Denon is not really a high end brand for products sold in the USA. It is built very nicely, but I don’t like the plastic illegible remote or the plastic drawer which they say is composite. Also there is no drawer open button on the illegible remote. If you want a true high end CD player this isn’t it. I am a classical musician and I know what real music sounds like. There is too much digital processing and it's clearly audible.

If you read about how this unit is made, you will be amazed, made in Japan, and inspected by the old man, the head guy there to make sure everything is perfect. My CDs sound like SACDs on this unit, it us utterly amazing. You would have to spend $15,000 to find something as good as this.If you're like me and don't want that inferior streaming sound, or you don't want to spend $20 to $30 a month for Audiophile streaming. This is the unit for you.You will not be disappointed.
