Mineral scale in your hot water tank can clog water flow and negatively affect brew temperature - this results in beverage inconsistency. To prevent your machine from clogging and breaking down, your beverage equipment should be descaled regularly. Dezcal is a safe option for removing lime scale build-up in your machine. Dezcal™ can be used on home coffee brewers, espresso machines (traditional and automatic), kettles, and pod and capsule machines. NSF certified for metal compatibility. For best results, use quarterly (water hardness in your area may require more or less frequent descaling).

I have a 5 liter countertop boiler for heating water for tea, soup, anything that needs near-boiling water. It has an electric pump in it to dispense the water, at the press of a button or by holding the container you want to dispense into against a small lever, similar to a soda fountain. The boiler tank is stainless steel, and can get a build-up of minerals on it over time, but the worst is the pump and the hose that carries the hot water to the dispenser nozzle. THAT gets clogged with minerals after a while. You can scour out the tank if you want, but there's no way to scrub out the pump and hose. For that, you need to dissolve the minerals out.I filled the tank with cold water and added a single packet of Dezcal. Even though the instructions call for a packet to treat a liter of water, it works fine in this case on five liters. This is because the descaler works on the minerals the entire time the tankful heats up. It doesn't have to just work while it's flowing from the smaller tank of a coffeepot to the spout. As it heated up, I put a big 1-liter pyrex measuring cup under the spout, and pressed the button to dispense water. The nozzle and pump inlet were very crusty with minerals, so it was a tiny trickle only...which is why I was treating it to begin with. This let some of the warm cleaner into the pump inlet, hose, and nozzle, where I let it sit another few minutes as the tank continued to heat. Every few minutes, I'd push the button to let a bit more flow through the pump, the solution in the assembly slowly eating the minerals away. By the time I could get the first liter through, the flow was almost completely restored.I poured out the first liter into the sink, replaced the cup, and ran another liter through in a few long streams. This was to make sure there was strong, hot descaler solution in the system. By the time I got the entire 5 liters pumped through, the entire thing was clean and descaled. Then I ran two full tanks of clean water through the system to remove the remaining cleaning chemical.Dezcal cleaned out the minerals in this boiler with a minimum of effort, and best of all, NO NASTY VINEGAR SMELL! I hate using vinegar to clean the coffee maker or the boiler, because the whole house smells like a pickle barrel for hours. This had no smell whatsoever!I still have three doses in the box to use when the minerals build back up again! This was effortless! Well worth the cost!

With the inexplicably huge increase in price to brew rite brand cleaner, tried something else. It is not as goodWhen I use brew rite, I make a few hours out of it. In my case I have a bunn thermo fresh with a pre-heated water reservoir, and also an insulated carafe. I also put a paper filter in the coffee maker so I can see what kind of stuff gets cleared out. I use the filter, because I also make a second run through, since I want to leave the water reservoir full of descaling cleaner for a while.I can tell that the inner copper tubing got cleaned out to some degree because I did see some mineral deposits in the filter I used while cleaning. With brew rite though, something additional happens. The inside of my insulated decanter also gets clean and shiny, the gunk in it loosened so that almost just from swirling (including some extended time sitting with the cleaner in it. (I’ve been deep cleaning my coffee maker like this, a few times a year for over 15 years. Brew rite was better. So yes. Brew rite is better, but costs way more nowadays. This is still good, 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This is the same brand of descaling solution that is on the Moccamaster website, so I trusted it to descale my Moccamaster. Those coffee makers are expensive so I only want to use what they suggest.Easy to use. Just pour the powder in the appropriate amount of water, pour into the reservoir, and run the coffee cycle as if you are brewing coffee. They suggest rinsing 2 or 3 times but I rinsed mine about 5 times - yeah, I'm weird. I just wanted to be sure every bit of the descaling liquid was out of my machine!I have to trust it did its job because I can't see the inside of the coffee maker.Moccamaster suggests doing it about every 3 months or so, or if you use the 100 count coffee filters, do it when the 100 coffee filters are gone. Since I only use my coffee machine in the morning and I'm the only one drinking it and it's about half a pot, I would do this after little more than 3 months (like 100 coffee filters time). This will do 4 so it should last a year or more.

Used this on my Moccamaster and it worked as it was supposed to. Coffee tasted so good after using the descaling powder. I have to descale more often than other parts of the country because the water in Arizona is so hard and full of minerals.
