This lantern was everything I could have hoped for. It was packaged in a generous amount of bubble wrap in a cardboard box to protect it during shipping. The lantern came with an instruction pamphlet that provided basic operating instructions. I filled the fount about half full with Firefly lamp oil. Left it for about 30 minutes for the wick to become saturated with oil. Raised the globe and lit the wick. Adjusted the wick down a little bit. Then lowered the globe. Let the lantern warm up for a couple of minutes and adjusted the wick for the desired brightness. It’s important to keep the wick low to prevent smoke from coming out of the lantern. The lantern is cool looking and puts out a nice warm glow of light. I couldn’t be happier with this purchase.

No leaks, about as bright as a non pressure kero lamp can be.

I have heard of complaints from modern dietz lanterns, however mine is leak free and very bright for being a wick lantern. I would highly suggest this or other dietz lanterns for camping or a backup light source for outdoors. These lanterns can be used indoors as well as outdoors however being a hurricane lantern the design is specialized for outdoors, while indoor lanterns tend to not have wind protection. I run mine with k-1 kerosene, they should run well with lamp oil as well as kerosene substitute line klean heat, do not however run these on other fuels not kerosene or lamp oil based, as these lamps are not designed for other fuel types

My lantern arrived bent up and had a dented base even though the box was perfect and it was bubble wrapped so I straightened it out and filled it 3/4 full with kerosene and its leaking.

I bought this lantern as a all purpose utility lantern for a friend of mine. The first one did leak but was quickly replaced by CORTES. Their service is A-1. I have used kerosene lanterns for many years and found the Dietz D-Lite to be one of the brightest, lanterns i have used, and the large globe makes it easy to clean after use unlike the tall chimney hurricane lanterns found in the stores. One suggestion I would make is to measure the kerosene with a measuring cup and use a funnel to fill them to make sure you dont overfill them. It is hard to gage the fuel level for most people looking down a small filler hole. It will hold 31 ounces of kerosene to provide long time burning. Most people dont fill them completely as it does make them heavier. A well made dietz will give service for many years as I still use my 1918 D-Lite and the new one i bought is just as good and bright as the old one. I believe in giving the best when giving a gift and testing something before I give it. As a alternative light source I would rate it as one of the best (flatwick) lights available anywhere. You will be pleased im sure,as I use mine for anything and everything from fishing to alternative light source As a rule,Dietz lanterns are way safer than most (house) lamps because when tipped over they are designed to go out within seconds. Also, you will not find any service better than service from CORTES as they run their business like a old time hardware store, the (CUSTOMER) is important to them. I was pleased with the D-Lite and so was my friend who recieved it as a gift.

Love the blue color. The wick that came with the lantern fell into the tank but a quick trip to Walmart and more wicks bought. Was packaged nice. Excellent lighting. After researching how to take it apart it was very easy to replace the wick. Would definitely recommend for bad weather

Not as bright as a gas Coleman lantern BUT you can fill it once with Kerosene or Lamp Oil and it's good for several evenings of use. Bright enough for my needs and operates for pennies an hour. Great for emergency lighting and these are much much better made than the knocks offs at the big box store.

Classic design and works well. The quality is OK.Two star rating overall on account of careless shipping by Amazon. The lamp was simply thrown in a box by someone who couldn't care less. These lamps are fragile and demand adequate packing. Mine arrived damaged, but too much hassle to return for exchange.

I had some low quality department store hurricane lanterns in the past for emergency use for power outages. Those gave me a bad impression in construction and operation. Generally defined as flimsy and clunky with a leaky fount. It is just that I haven't seen a higher quality ones like this Dietz 90.The big difference is in the feel of the product. "Solid" basically describe it well. The flimsiness, clunky-ness, and the leakiness of the department store type are not present on this one. The mechanism controlling the wick is smooth, solid and robust (as for a 7/8" wick). The globe lifter lever's operation is firm and solid. The chimney (globe holder) is the same.Instead of kerosene, I prefer Ner Mtizvah paraffin lamp oil as I have great experience with it being truly smokeless and odourless. See the photos as the Dietz 90 is lit with this oil.The bottom line is that, this lantern is on the expensive side but it's shown as the product's quality. Proper care and maintenance would make it last.
