I bought this dvd rom because my 10 year old Memorex had trouble reading many 20 year old DVD-R discs containing Old Time Radio programs. i thought maybe the Memorex has a worn out laser. I was partially correct. This DVD did do better, BUT never try to use a 20 year old DVD-R, because they absolutely wear out and become useless, unlike factory produced DVDs,

My old burner managed to produce several coasters - no matter of a brand of discs I used as well as several different burning software I tried, so it was time for a replacement. I chose Pioneer because of solid performance from a reputable brand. So far, it works flawlessly on all kinds of burns - music, movie, backups or image files.The install was easy (I'm a retired geek) as expected, with all the hardware included in the package, and I readily found the appropriate drivers from the web. You can let Windows use its native generic driver but I always prefer to install the one specific to the brand of the device.I must mention the packaging - very nicely done, not like some other optical drives I've ordered in the past, that came only packed in a flimsy envelope. This one came in a proper padded box, as it should be with any precision calibrated device. I'd like to thank the gentleman who answered my question in that regard!All in all, this burner might cost a bit more but it definitely is worth it, great and reliable Pioneer quality, and, from my past experience with this brand, I know it will work flawlessly for years to come.
