This is a PHDVM-63DM DVCAM DigitalMaster Mini DV Cassette. It is compatible with any mini-DV or DV camcorder or VTR. This tape contains two magnetic layers that improve the carrier-to-noise ratio and produce 90% fewer errors than traditional DV tape. When recording in 16:9, more information is recorded versus 4:3 and there is greater possibility for errors. DigitalMaster reduces that risk by 90%.

These work great on my HD camera. After recording repeatedly on one ... maybe 6 times, I started getting a few dropouts. To be expected! I think you are only supposed to record once on each tape, but I do for Youtube videos.

I tested these tapes versus the regular Sony Mini DV tapes with low light footage shot on my Sony HVR Z5U, and noticed better images when I connected it to an HD monitor via HDMI. When images are better lit, the difference is harder to notice, but the slight improvement is worth the price difference on professional shoots.

The only drawback to this sony product is the price, but I have found it is worth it. I have not had a single drop out since I started using them.

I test this in both my Sony FX7 and FX1000. Big difference in quality compared to premium tapes. Most of all, not a single drop out.

Please note: only one tape comes in this little box. Not two. 9 bucks is a little expensive for just one tape. At least it's a professional tape.

These are great tapes used with a semi-professional Sony digital camera. No skips or crashes. I'd do business again with this seller.

I'm an independent filmmaker who shoots with an older but high level professional level HDV camera. The Canon XLH1. This camera can record video both ways, with either a Ninja Atomos drive, or tape. Many who use this model believe that capturing on cassette does not give you the highest quality level as recording on a drive. This is not true, unless you're recording on a standard MiniDV cassette. Although the tape slot takes conventional sized MiniDV tapes, the Sony DigitalMaster cassette is not standard by any means. The tape is labelled PHDVM; It's designed for HDV. Providing professional mastering quality.

These professional HDV tapes cost more than Sony's standard HDV miniDV tapes, but the greater colour saturation is worth it.

Tape may be old fashioned but, unlike a card, at least you can play it back to see what you've shot. And unlike a card you can hear it when it breaks. (You don't know what's happened until you unload a card). The quality is just as good as card too (I've compared it). These, like most things that are any good, are more expensive due to more metal on the tape. That means better picture quality. You get what you pay for.
