In the early days of cave diving, reels were not available to buy off the shelf. Divers used anything they could, including empty electrical wire spools. When exploring, divers would pay out the line and if they didn't empty the spool it would be left in the cave for the next dive. Cave diving pioneer, Woody Jasper, used a medical tape spool with cover to hold that short length of safety line. Today, Dive Rite's Finger Spools are most often used as a gap reel or for short distance exploration. Small and low-profile, a spool fits nicely out of the way in a pocket or clipped off to a D-ring.The holes in the side allow for clipping in a double-ended snap anywhere along the perimeter of the spool to keep the line tight when not in use. Dive Rite Finger Spools are made of corrosion proof injection molded POM acetal plastic; finger spools are simple to use and virtually indestructible in the water. The finger spool is available in 2-line lengths and 2-line colors of 60' or 120' (18.3m or 36.6m) in white or orange 0.073" (1.86mm) diameter DuPont fiber braid #24-line or orange Dacron that does not stretch with breakage strength of 220 lbs (99.80kg). Spools come standard with a large stainless-steel double ended snap clip. Finger spool weighs 6.4 oz (181g) and measure (Dia. x W) 3.47 x 1.65" (8.8 x 4.2cm).

Did my NSS-CDS and TDI Full-Cave courses and another ~50 cave dives between Mexico and Florida with these Dive Rite spools. Never had any issues, or heard anyone else complain about them (which is shocking given how gear-opinionated cave divers are).I try to make a couple trips to North Florida each year. Last outing I saw Lamar Hires (CEO of Dive Rite) at Peacock Springs. Guess what finger spools he uses? Sure, all these things are basically the same, and you can probably save a few bucks on here buying some random brand nobody can pronounce. But given my life may someday depend on it, I’m sticking with the brand whose CEO uses their own gear.

Very good quality spool its hard plastic but still very firm and sturdy, the actual cord looks and feel very high quality, I've used it to deploy a DSMB a few times already and its great.

Very satisfied with its quality and compactness. Not surprised though since this is a Dive Rite product. Fits well inside my Dive Rite thigh pocket case (containing the spool, spare dive mask, and torch light). Won't hesitate to recommend this product.
