The Executive Slate has six, compact erasable slates held together by a stainless steel ring. A cord with sleeve stows the attached solid carbon stick pencil. Small enough to fit in a tiny pocket or grouped with other larger items, the Executive Slate is ideal for note taking or a back up communication device.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the high quality of the Dive Rite items. This slate has multiple sheets fastened by 2 metal rings on the top and all the sheets exhibit a hole on the bottom middle area to clip the plastic fastener with lanyard and pencil attached. The pencil works great and smooth. The cord is a stretchy type and can be easily tied onto other fasteners. Because the plastic fastener wasn't the greatest, I removed it. I also removed one of the top metal rings. I added an extra fastener to the remaining metal ring and attached the pencil cord to the metal fastener. This way I didn't have to worry about using the same fastener to hold onto my book and my BCD. I use one metal fastener that is permanently attached to my slate and pencil. The slate is a bit small, but since there are multiple sheets, I'm not worried.

I bought this for the pencil, but I was pleasantly surprised as I expected this to be a single slate. This is a set of maybe 5 with hardware to keep them together. Will be a useful tool to have things pre-written or be able to save notes. Its a nice compact size - fits well in a hand and pocket. If you're looking at this and reading reviews, just buy it already, and get a Melamine Cleaning Sponge (aka mr clean magic eraser). Alternatively, you can use sand in a pinch.Go dive!

The split rings aren't going to last need to be replaced by something more tolerate of salt water. The clip on the string is plastic and likewise won't last more than a day or two. But otherwise it's small and meets my requirements. I would be ready to make some modifications if it needs to last more than a few days in salt.

This slate would be perfect if they had used a different type of plastic. The problem is it is virtually impossible to erase. Typically, a magic eraser clears a slate in a few seconds. Underwater, a little sand will do the same thing. That is definitely not true in this case. Even sandpaper doesn't work well. I'll wet sand every page to make them less coarse, which will probably help, but that's a pretty major hassle.Aside from that, it is perfect for technical divers carrying backup decompression schedules and other critical information, with pages left over for taking notes and passing messages underwater--if only you could erase them!I won't bother with the plastic clip. It's not that big a deal, but I replaced it with stainless. So, as-is, I don't love it for the reasons above, but the idea is right on. My $8 slate ended up wasting time and costing more like $13, but compared to everything else you need for deep technical dives, let alone the price of helium, it's inconsequential. Underwater, it is exactly the right tool.

My spouse and I use these to leave notes in the shower for each other since we go to work at different times in the morning. Works great!

These small slates are perfect for my BCD pockets. I really like having several slates at my finger tips. The clip is great, especially for keeping order.

I was expecting to have something to sheath the pencil in but it would seems to just dangle. You also need to use the hook and eye to change to pages. One possible advantage is to devote one page to each day of diving; then unhook the and go to the next page. The pencil seems to first class, but no sure on the replacement unless you go to the "golf" score-type pencil. You could spend some time 'flipping" back to the previous pages if you kept them clipped together. The quality is excellent but the execution could use some thought.

My slates are 3.5" x 5", which is smaller than the 4x6 I'd seen described in other reviews. But that ends up being ok, because the pockets of my BCD are really tiny, and with 4x6 slates I have to cut the corners off to get them to fit.The clip is indeed really cheap. I untied the pencil from it and tied it onto a small carabiner I had lying around, which should hold up better.
