The trunk lid pull down motor and associated (internal) gear assembly was surprisingly easy to remove from the Eldorado. Once on the bench and disassembled, I noticed the teeth on the old gear were worn down to a point where they no longer meshed with the motor worm drive. The new gear was a perfect replacement to the original. But, before the new gear could be threaded on the trunk latch I needed to use a triangular metal file to cut those trunk latch threads back to near original condition. Apparently, not only were the threads on the old (plastic) gear worn, but the metal threads on the trunk latch were also worn (rounded). Once I did so, the new gear mated beautifully with the latch and traveled up and down the shaft without resistance. Reinstalled the unit and it worked like new.

I can confirm this fits my older Lincoln Continental even though it is not listed as fitting. Threads are tight and need to be run by hand a few times before putting the unit together.

I've rebuilt my pull down several times over the 20+ years of owning my 89 firebird. This iteration this part is manufactured with poorer tolerances and is too tight on the threads of the shaft. So I ended up using some valve lapping compound (something like Permatex 80036) and running it on the the threads manually until it freed up. Then cleaned and greased it. Works ok. But sadly the Dorman parts typically have these small issues that you just have to make them work... but its the only choice on this product (all other sellers are just rebranding the dorman part). Now the housing moving from clear to black plastic is an improvement as the black plastic seems stronger. I do reinforce the housing though as they are prone to breaking.I don't let anyone shut the hatch on the firebird other than me so it never gets slammed but I have found that after 10 years these parts start to lose strength.
