Product Description

Covered by U.S. Patent No. RE45,586 and 7882808 B2

Ever wondered why your chicken’s fertility drops off after a while? Particularly with larger breeds and rough roosters? So often, it is because the back and sides of the hens have been scratched or even ripped from the enthusiastic male. Injured hens won’t let the rooster mate them, resulting in poor fertility. As a breeder, this often goes unnoticed unless hens are regularly checked. It can be very hard to see wounds with all the feathers in the way.

Our high quality chicken saddles provide protection for the girls and grip for the boys. In the past, before we realized the damage that can occur, we had birds die from having their sides ripped open. This happened despite the claws being trimmed and the spurs cut off! (We highly recommend doing this as well). Now all our birds wear a chicken saddle for the entire breeding season.

Easy to put on by yourself

Easy to put on by yourself.

Our saddles are very easy to put on. They fit a large range of sizes because of their unique fastening system. We use quality non rusting copper snaps on the ends of each strap for durability, which gives maximum adjustment. There is no need to bend their wings through small loops, simply wrap the strap around their wing and fasten. When the cover flap is done up, there are no loose straps to get caught. The straps are soft and shouldn't cut into the birds wings, like elastic straps can, unless you do them up too tight. Always leave room for a couple of fingers to easily slide under the strap to reduce the chance of the straps causing any issues.

Because of being able to lock each strap to the right length, the saddle does not slip from side to side, which happens if the straps just slide through a fold in the top. It is extremely rare for our saddles to come off if adjusted properly. On a rare occasion the chicken may flap their wings or appear uncomfortable with this strange thing on their back. They soon get over it (usually within an hour or two) and then you can get the benefit from it for as long as they need. Please be patient and give them time to get used to it. In our breeding season we would have about 70 hens wear them and we have never had one not get used to it.

Checking the strap

Checking for correct length.

It is important to check that the straps are the right tension under their wings. If you can easily fit a finger or preferably two in under the strap, it should be fine.

Protection, durability, comfort and a saddle that stays on, have been the driving forces behind our design. We breed from about 70 birds each season and have been using saddles for the last 8 years. We know what works and what doesn’t.

Putting them on your chicken at night when they are roosting, can help their transition to wearing them. Every chicken responds differently as it is something they are not used to. Sometimes the saddle can draw unwanted attention from the rooster or its pen buddies. This is usually solved simply by giving them time to get used to it. A helpful hint is to put saddles on at least 2 birds at the same time, even if only one needs it.

Protected and ready to go.

THREE SIZES, MESH OPTIONS & REPLACEMENT SHOULDER COVERS

We now have “Small” ones for bantams and young birds, our “Standard” ones for medium and large birds, our “Extra Large”, for massive birds and all options now available in 2 different colors of Mesh. We also sell replacement shoulder covers for all our saddles in all three sizes. Just click on our brand name in blue at the end of a products title and you will see our range of products. The canvas is breathable, tough and firm 14 oz cotton, that keeps its shape very well. It doesn’t easily blow up in the wind or flip out of the way. The trims are all double sewn with a strong thread and the grip cord, which gives the rooster more traction during mating, is triple sewn. The mesh is a heavy duty polyester UV stabilised shade cloth, which allows great airflow but still with great protection.

Feather pecked chicken.

A feather pecked bird that will heal and regrow its feathers with the help of a saddle, as seen in the next photo.

Our saddles also help birds heal, if they have been feather pecked, preventing further damage. By fitting them at the first sign of any feather pecking, it helps stop the habit from developing. With the damaged area covered, the other birds are unable to continue pecking and so the feathers grow back to normal without having to remove and isolate the injured bird.

Because of its adjustable straps, it fits on half grown birds as well, covering most of their tail . Particularly helpful when growing out young males together, as they are renowned for feather pecking backs and tails.

Protects regrowth

With the saddle lifted up, you can see how the healing has begun and the regrowth is protected.

Down Under Outdoors.

We are a husband and wife team that breed show quality Wyandottes and Orpingtons for sale in Australia. Our main business is selling a range of products online, but our chickens take up about half of our time, as we sell hundreds of young birds at about 6 months of age each year.

We have used our saddles without any problems in heavy rain falls, heavy frosts and even in the middle of summer when it regularly gets over 100 degrees in the shade. Their design has evolved over the last 8 years to the quality product we now have available.

I've had chickens for about 14 years. I used saddles about 12 years ago, but they were much different than these. Things change! I have a new flock of chickens that are about 9 months old now, and two of the hens are favorites of my two roosters. I've got 18 girls but these two seem to get more attention than the others. Unfortunately that means that their backs are basically devoid of feathers at this point. My biggest concern is that with naked skin showing, they are subject to mosquitoes, and other biting bugs, Plus being scratched or hurt by the roosters.I chose these particular Saddles because they were a mesh material. I didn't need the Wing protectors, but they came as a set. I thought they were a bit expensive, but the reviews for them were very good. I chose mesh because I live in Central Florida, and it's hot here about 8 months of the year. Plus we get a lot of rain through the summer. I figured that the mesh would allow them to stay cool and dry quickly. No solid material to make them overheat during the summer months. They were easy to put on, although the girls weren't very happy with me! Lol! One girl walked backwards for about 10 minutes, the white one, and scared everybody in the flock!! I think they thought she had lost her mind or something. And the other girl didn't even notice she had it on. Neither one notices they're wearing it at this point. The mesh material is very flexible yet very strong. They are extremely well made, and the snaps are very strong. My girls are mid to smaller size so I used it on the smaller snap size, and it fit fine. I imagine that I will get many years of use out of these. I was hoping that I could buy a two pack of the mesh, but it was only available in size small. I'm not happy at having to spend $26 for two saddles, but what can I say. As I stated earlier my decision was based on it being a mesh material, and being the only such mesh Saddles available that I can find.Overall, I think they are a very good product. They are very well made, and very sturdy. I'm sure that they're very easy to clean if necessary. And they protect the girls backs very well. Very happy with my purchase!

Bought this for a hen at the bottom of the pecking order who was getting harassed by the rooster as well as several dominant hens. She was losing feathers from the harassment. I received this saddle and the shipping was FAST! It was easy to figure out, but there were also instructions just in case, which was helpful. It went on the hen very easily and fit nicely. It stays on her securely even when she is very active and when she gets attention from the rooster. Actually just having it on her seems to dissuade some of the other hens from picking on her. Her feathers are starting to grow back now. She shows no discomfort or anything from wearing it and actually seems to be a little more confident since she is not being harassed so much. ABSOLUTELY worth the money. It seems to be very well made, and sturdy, and easy to clean. If I ever need to saddle another hen I'm 100% buying from this company again. Thanks so much!

We tried several different saddles for some of our hens which were getting worn feathers from an overzealous young rooster. We tried making our own as well as buying a few different models on Etsy. This one from Down Under Outdoors was the best. The second best was one we made ourselves out of an old pair of jeans. What makes this product far superior to others:1. The fabric is really sturdy and doesn't shift around. The other types we tried from Etsy were way too flimsy and would just flop to the side, not protecting the chicken at all.2. The size is adjustable. The one we made ourselves was a pain to keep cutting the fabric to get it to fit, and it only fit one chicken. The ones from Etsy were also difficult to get the right size. We had several chickens with damaged feathers, so we managed to find a couple that fit, but it was really trial and error. Also, would need to have several sizes on hand if you have different breeds of chickens. Even when we got the fit right, the Etsy ones were ineffective due to the soft fabric always slipping to the side.3. Easy to put on and take off. This is a huge plus! Since you can open and close the snaps, you don't need to wrestle with the chicken to get it over the wings. We bought one at first to try, but after our experience comparing it with other chicken saddles we came back to Amazon and ordered a couple more. I like that we only need to keep a few on hand because they actually fit all our chickens. With the other types we would need to store several different sizes.I hope that if the seller reads this review that they will come out with a new model that also has wing protection. I would definitely buy a couple more if they offered that.

I had my doubts, but it worked great, stayed on my hen with out issue, and with in a couple weeks, all her feathers had grown back in. I’ll keep it around for any future feather needs, and I’d buy extra of these if I needed more. Held up very well.

Bought this for one of our hens who had a injury on her right thigh. It worked well on keeping it covered so that she and others wouldn't continue to peck at it and make it worse. The quality of this item is excellent and heavy duty. The weight of it did not hinder her in any way. We tried a different brand and version prior to this one, this one is way superior and worth the extra money you may spend on other brands and styles. Will plan on ordering another one or two just to have on hand in case more than one hen is injured at a time.

You can tell this product was developed with a lot of attention to detail using only top quality materials. I am extremely happy with this purchase. The instructions to fit onto the chicken were perfect and the saddle does not bother her at all, she is now protected from the others who were pulling her back feathers out. I purchased a cloth protector from a local retailer for the same price and it was nowhere near the quality of this product, nor did it fit her well or keep the others away from her and returned it same day. I will be purchasing this product again and highly recommend it. Very high Quality Product!

I've had these saddles/aprons on a couple of chooks for about a month now, because of no feathers left on their backs from constant rooster attention towards their two favourite hens. The aprons were easy to fit and the girls had no problem quickly getting used to them. They actually seem quite proud of their aprons! The hardest thing was catching the chooks and keeping them still/calm, then the fitting was easy, but I did read the instructions well and played with opening and closing of the clips etc beforehand. I used the standard clip stud fitting first (there is a size adjustment system). One chook needed hers tightened (clip moved to a different stud) due to slipping off one wing after a couple of weeks of wearing it, she's been fine since then. I forgot to insert the optional soft black plastic 'wings' that came with the aprons, but found I haven't needed them anyway (the 'wings' seem to be for stopping the apron from sliding sideways out of place, but I recommend initially trying the apron without them). Occasionally the rear end of an apron is turned upwards after a night jostling on the roost, but then it ends up back in the correct position on its own during the day. Their feathers are starting to grow back properly under the aprons, which is great because I was a bit concerned the tips would continue to be rubbed off. So I'm very pleased with this product, even the colours are nice. A big thank you to the designers and manufacturers.

These saddles are fantastic! They were packed well, came with detailed instructions and were very easy to put on.The canvas-like fabric is very durable & I have a lot of confidence it will last, especially when they're out in the wet.The hens barely notice them & the additional 'shoulder' protection has already done it's intended job after just one day on.Highly recommend & will buy more for the younger chickens once mature if needed.
