APPLICATION
J-42083 Timing Pin and Adapter
- Works on Caterpillar C-7, C-9, C-11, C-13, C-15, C-16, 3179, 3196, 3200, 3300 and 3400.

J-38587-A Engine Barring Socket
- Works on Caterpillar(CAT) engines 3200/3406 series
- C13/C15/C16/3208/3400/3406e/3508/3512/3500 EUI/MUI engines,Mack E7/E-7 ETEC Engine etc.
USE INSRUCTION
- 1. Remove the plug from either the left or right side timing access holes.
- 2. To install, hand tighten the J42083 Automatic Timing Pin Lock into the timing access hole.
- 3. Preload the spring on the automatic timing lock by pushing the slide handle forward and turn it clockwise to engage either of the two locking slots.
- 4. Manually, turn engine in direction of rotation(usually counter clockwise refer to Caterpillar Service Manual)until a notice “click” sound is heard.
- 5.The automatic timing pin plunger has now engaged the flywheel timing holes in either the top center compression or exhaust stroke.
- 6. To remove, turn slide handle counter clockwise to release spring tension on the plunger (if plunger doesn’t retract from flywheel with light pressure, jog the flywheel back and forth). Unscrew from flywheel housing.
USE INSRUCTION
- 1. Insert the tool into the flywheel housing until it engages the ring gear
- 2. Then attach a 1/2-Inch square drive ratchet or breaker bar and turn.
USE INSRUCTION
- 1. When you finish the valve adjustments to the injector height, you can use the tool to accurately adjust the injector height to 78.0 ± 0.2 mm (3.07 ± 0.01 inch).
- TIP:The dimension is measured from the top of the unit injector to the machined ledge of the fuel injector body.
- 2. Tighten lock-nut to a torque of 100 ± 10 N·m (74 ± 7 lb ft).

I've used the tool from CAT and these ones, and they're Naismith the exact same thing except these are reasonably priced.

The kit works good. On my 3406B, you had to remove the black adapter part to make the pin lock work. But it works great. The gear drive works geeat as well.

Anyone that would like to have a kit to do your injectors on the the road or shop this is it. Only thing missing is a set of thickness gauges.

I am a retired caterpillar dealer mechanic. I ordered this set for a friend who wanted me to teach them how to di an overhead on their 3406E. I compared them with my factory Cat tools and they are identical!

The pinning tool didn’t really work too well I ended up just using a bolt. Also the injector too is 78mm when the stem is flush with the red part.
