I’ve bought several of the Hot Dots products to use with my special needs son. We have a core homeschool curriculum and these products are a hands on, and more self directed, way of learning that he looks forward to.One of the more challenging things about Hot Dots is, given the amount of products targeting various skills and levels, picking the right one. The first grade essentials works best for students in late kindergarten through first grade. It covers long and short vowels, and beginning and ending consonants for reading. For math it offers practice in addition, subtraction, and shapes.One of the best uses of the first grade essentials book is that I can just have my son work through specific pages of that relates to the material we’ve covered elsewhere. This is very efficient from a time perspective.

I love this product almost as much as my kindergarten daughter! We have used a Hot Dots item in the past, and this purchase solidifies my trust in the brand. My sister, who is an elementary school reading specialist recommended this product to me and the kids LOVE it. They find the light turning red or green so fun. Perfect for my 4k student and 1st grader.

It does work efficiently, however I was a bit disappointed that it did not read the words, it beeps different tones. I purchased it as a reading aid for a first grader, who is learning to read, on their own. They have to already know how to read on order to use this.
