So I bought this as a novelty for a local board in our borough. It's not meant to stand up to vigorous pounding and it's not well made but for a cheap novelty, very nice.

This is an actual wooden gavel, of normal proportions, with a block to strike the gavel onto to get that clack sound.It's not made of an exotic wood or oversized like some gavels I've seen, but it's still a totally acceptable gavel for official proceedings. It's priced (and marketed) for novelty use, like costume parties, and it would probably work very well for that. The light weight of the obviously stained wood may mean the gavel doesn't last for decades of constant hammering, but in my experience in courts, Judges very rarely actually use these. This is just fine for occasional use in a real court, council chamber, or meeting.I use it when I put my kids in time out. It's also cheap enough to decorate if you needed a gag gift. But putting all that aside, the nice dark color and the noise it makes when used are actually pretty good just as a real gavel, and in my opinion that means this is a great value.
