Product Description

The Explore Scientific 2-inch Dielectric-Coated Diagonal Mirror comes complete with 1.25-inch Adapter and dust covers. Solid construction and light weight, this first surface coated diagonal mirror reflects 99% of the light to help maintain the brightest possible image from your telescope.

The insert barrel is a double taper, so it can be smoothly inserted or withdrawn from the focuser. The wide part of the taper prevents the diagonal from accidentally falling out of the focuser if the set screw loosens up. Eyepieces are secured in the diagonal with a compression ring lock on both the two-inch eyepiece holder and the 1.25-inch eyepiece holder.

It is not very well made, nor is it bright. Most notably, the eyepiece cannot be secured by the thumb screws. It doesn’t fall out, but your eyepiece will spin. This makes it next to impossible to use a zoom eyepiece or a polarizing filter. Sigh…

This is a very nice star diagonal! I was able to compare it side by side with the inexpensive Celestron star diagonal that comes with many of their catadioptric telescopes. The image in the Explore Scientific dielectric coated diagonal was noticeably brighter and crisper.

Mine came with an APO ED80 telescope, it always had this haze around it, didn't thought much of it, but when I started rotating it, the stars in the view wouldn't stay on, the thing would rotate them around, poor collimation. Very disappointed. I would say stay away from this one, and the glue seems like is coming off too.

The mirror inside is held in place by very thin plastic retainers screwed into the diagonal. This thin plastic arrived broken and until much later when I finally decided to take it apart and see why the views were terrible, it would clank when you turned the diagonal over in your hand and rattle when you moved or tapped it, that is when I discovered how poorly it was made.I have several other 2" diagonals so I didn't worry about this one, and this is the only one I have ever seen made this bad. Sure, it looks good, but it isn't worth a tenth of what they are asking.Buy a different one, any one.

The diagonal mirror came completely loose just by UPS handling of the package and was getting damaged by flopping around inside the diagonal. I looked inside and found that there was no mechanical mirror holder, just adhesive pads behind the mirror which failed to hold the mirror. I also saw that the mirror was just barely big enough to do the job, which means that the very edge of the mirror is being used for reflections. Not good! I would not recommend this diagonal or any other made the same way (with three screws on each side panel).
