I've done auto repair most of my life. And, I've used a wide variety of anti-freeze hydrometers to check the level of protection. In almost every case, I've typically used the Auto Parts Store units, or good old Wal-Mart... In every case, almost without exception, I've gotten INACCURATE READINGS. The E-Z Red S102 Anti-Freeze Hydrometer really works perfectly. Its inexpensive, and effective. What more can anyone ask for.Side Note: Make sure that the White Disk inside the Hydrometer moves smoothly up and down without sticking, or rubbing against the clear plastic case. It must move freely up and down to give an accurate reading. If you happen to get one that "sticks", Either Return it for a replacement, or contact EZRED.Com for a replacement. Purchased this right in time before the coldest temperatures in decades would hit town (-30°F). I checked both my vehicles and while one had coolant good to -50°F, my truck only would be good to -18°F. These numbers are an approximate since you have to level the device in order to get good readings, but considering the given -30°F it was clear to me that the truck wouldn't survive this cold. I left the truck running during the day when outside, and only turned it off only when back in the heated garage.If I could take half a star off I would do it; the reason is that it is somewhat difficult to level it. I wish one side would have a straight edge so it could be held against a wall for more consistent readings, but other than this it is a great quick and easy to use tool to get the coolant mix in the right ballpark.

The first thing I did was check the accuracy with a purchased 50/50 diluted antifreeze and it was pretty accurate, maybe off by 3 degrees, but for its purpose accurate. In comparison I had a brand new Prestone brand tester that wouldn't even register. It was free to move but the scale started at 0 so at least 35 degrees off. This unit has a starting temp of +32 so pure water would at least cause some movement. The red numbers on the scale don't offer much contrast and are somewhat hard to read though. Keeping the unit level during measuring really isn't a problem since I just align the water level with the embossed wording on the back side that they are parallel to each other. Accuracy is the key for me. I'd deduct 1/2 point because of the faint red lettering though or no contrast.

Only tells you the freezing point, meanwhile other products tell you the boiling point as well. Not like it really matters anyways, would just be nice to know.Not really a clear indication of where exactly the 50/50 line is, going to assume that it's the 36.7 degree mark. For some reason the fill line is also on the back side?

See attached pictures:- it shows incorrect 10 F for distilled water ( should be 32F)- acrylic case grinded to smooth imperfections ( looks ugly)Return was easyI do NOT recommend this product

As described. However, it seems to measure the coolant in both of my vehicles as good to -60*F ... and that just doesn't sound right to me as it should be between -40 and -45*F. Time will tell. I was going to buy the E-Z Red battery tester but I think I'll hold off for now.

Used this one when I was a apprentice...in 1978 the new ones just don't work for me. Nice to see it was assembled in canada as well :) will only lend out the other one ... :) Oh the bulb is black like the old one You can easily read this one. The rubber where it joins the plastic is bent as it is stuffed in the box just heat it up with a heat gun and massage it straight. and you got a nice antifreeze tester. Oh I am a mechanic of 40 plus years and a real fuss butt. ( I bought 2 )
